“O português é um povo de oito ou oitenta. E qual o clube mais português nas suas características? É o Benfica, disso não tenho qualquer dúvida. Por isso, terá sempre mais dificuldade em lidar com o insucesso.” Simões dá o exemplo da mudança de estado de graça de Roger Schmidt da época passada para esta: “Um treinador que fez um grande trabalho agora é considerado uma desgraça. Talvez a renovação de Rui Costa tenha sido precipitada, mas estou de fora e não sei se ele tinha um clube que pudesse levá-lo. Mas essa passagem da euforia para a depressão é uma marca muito portuguesa e mais evidente no Benfica do que nos outros clubes.” Simões faz a comparação com o país: “Muitas vezes damos mais valor aos defeitos do que às virtudes e isso é um problema no futebol e não só.” Em relação ao Sporting, Simões diz que, a determinada altura, os leões tiveram um erro histórico: “Quiseram ser maiores do que o Benfica em vez de serem melhores. É impossível ser maior. O Benfica está em todo o lado.” Sobre os dragões, o antigo internacional diz que os dragões são um reflexo de Pinto da Costa: “O sucesso do FC Porto deve-se à grande figura do seu presidente, mas também é graças à cultura desenvolvida por este que o FC Porto cresceu menos do que devia em relação a tudo o que ganhou.
