Anxiety from Unfinished Tasks
from The Autistic Mile · host Jim Gaffney
Sometimes, an unfinished task can feel much bigger than the task itself. Some autistic individuals can experience significant discomfort when work is left incomplete. An unfinished project, unresolved obligation, or lingering responsibility can introduce a sense of uncertainty that makes it difficult to fully relax or focus on anything else. For someone who relies heavily on predictability and clear expectations, that open-endedness can create a mental vacuum. Without knowing exactly when something will be finished, what could go wrong, or whether another problem is waiting around the corner, the mind may start filling in the gaps with worst-case scenarios. This can make unfinished work feel less like a minor inconvenience and more like a source of constant background tension. Having a clear plan, defined next steps, realistic deadlines, or even simply knowing when the task will be revisited can help restore some of that lost sense of control. The goal isn’t to eliminate every loose end from life—that’s rarely possible. It’s to understand why uncertainty can weigh so heavily on some people and to create enough structure that unfinished business doesn’t become overwhelming. #TheAutisticMile #Autism #ActuallyAutistic #Neurodiversity #UnfinishedTasks #Anxiety #AutisticStress #NeedForStructure #Predictability #ExecutiveFunction #EmotionalRegulation #AutismAcceptance #UnderstandingAutism #MentalHealth #YouTubeShorts
