1566年9月7日淩晨，奧斯曼大軍與匈牙利大戰之時，77歲高齡的蘇萊曼一世在軍帳中駕崩。幾星期後，蘇萊曼的遺體回到伊斯坦堡，他的死訊正式昭告天下。聞訃之日，連歐洲列國君主亦稱頌他是「足以與所羅門王媲美的偉大帝王」。蘇萊曼大帝除了武功顯赫，在治國理政方面也同樣令人讚歎。他完善了帝國的法律體系、重視行政規範建設、摒除積弊、賞罰嚴明。
