Hello, welcome back to another episode of Broken Record. I'm Ellie. I'm your host and this week we are going to be finishing up the artist of the week from last week. So it's more like artist of two weeks, whatever.
Anyway, um yeah, we're gonna be finishing that up. I was Billy Eilish. We, last week I talked about her childhood, what albums she's released or EP's like don't smile at me, when we all fall asleep, where do we go? Happier than ever.
And so this week we're gonna talk about more like, I don't know, more than music, I guess. We're talking about, um well obviously we're music. So we're talking about music that she's done for different movies or tv shows. We're talking about music videos, we're talking about her tours, we're talking about award shows, and we're talking about which is done recently and what she has coming up.
So we're gonna start off with the music she's done for tv shows and movies. So I think she's obviously has a lot of songs that were in tv shows or movies, but she has a couple songs that she's written like specifically for movies and tv shows. And so one of the first ones, I think the first one that she ever released that was specifically for a tv show was called Board. It's in the Netflix show 13 Reasons Why and it's in season one episode 13 called Tape Seven Side A and then that came out in 2017 I believe.
And then in 2020 last year, really released the James Bond theme for the new James Bond movie No Time Today and that's what the song's called. And so the song came, the song and music video came out last year, but the movie came out like two, three weeks ago. So it was kind of funny because we heard the song and we knew and we figured out what the song is about what we were trying to like relate it to what the new James Bond movie was gonna be about. But I don't know, I haven't seen the new James Bond movie yet so I can't really talk about it because I don't know what I'm talking about.
But if I see it, I'll let you know how the song correlates. And then another one, her most recent song that was like specifically for the screen was Lo Vaz Al-Lividar. I don't know, I'm totally butching that. It's a Spanish song.
She sings it with Rosalía, who has a beautiful voice. And it's for the HBO Max show Euphoria. And it was in the Euphoria special episode Part 2 Jewels, who's a character. And I'm scared of the show Euphoria.
It scares me so I also don't know what that one's about. But yeah. So this is really helpful but I'm informing you it's gonna be great. It's fun.
Okay music videos. The first one I want to talk about, she's really still a lot of music videos but I have a couple I want to talk about. The first one I want to talk about is When the Party's Over. And this music video is so cool.
It's so cool. It's it's Billy in an all-white room wearing a white outfit, sitting in a white table in a white chair. Everything's white except for Billy's hair, her necklace, and a drink on the table. So her hair is blue, like a very vibrant blue.
Her necklaces are silver and then the drink is black. Which is cool. And in the video, in the music video, she drinks the glass, she drinks the black liquid, which is kind of scary. I don't want to drink a black liquid but she does and it looks really cool.
She drinks it and as the song goes on and it hits more of a peak, she starts crying but she's not crying normal to her. She's crying like the black liquid. Black liquid is coming out of her eyes. And it's so cool because she also doesn't have, she has very little emotion on her face.
Like, it's like she's numb almost. Like she's like she's being told to drink and so she's drinking, but she's not really thinking about it. Like she's just numb. And then once the tears start coming out, she kind of like you kind of see her pain a little bit but it's also not like, I don't know, it's so cool because she's like in the beginning when she hasn't drinking yet and she's in while she's drinking, she's numb.
She's not, I wouldn't say numb but she's like not feeling anything. She's not showing us any emotion. And the second she starts crying, she like you can see like full on sobbing. It's a very intense and it's so cool.
And I recommend it. It's probably not good if you don't like things being in your eye or near your eye. I have a friend who like cannot watch that video because she's scared of like objects or items getting close to her eye. So it's probably not good if you can't deal with that.
But if you can't watch it, it's a really cool video. Another one that I just want to talk about for like a quick two seconds is you should see me in a crown, the vertical video where she literally it's so it's so cool. She literally it's a video. It's like a two second video that replays just over and over.
And it's a tarantula crawling out of her mouth. Like it's her mouth is closed and then she opens it and a tarantula crawls out. And it's real too. Like it wasn't CGI or anything.
It was real. It's spider was in her mouth. Like that's so cool. That's so so so so so.
So like cool. And like Billy does all of her own stunts. Like she drinks the liquid. She had the tubes on her eyes that released the black liquid.
She has the spider in her mouth. In one of her other music videos, she has snake around her like she's so cool. I want to be here. I want to have her braveness.
I don't know if that was the right word but I think it is. The next one I want to talk about is Barry a Friend. This video is so brilliant. It's so brilliant.
It's so insane. It's um if you didn't know the Billy's this song is in Billy's album when we all fall asleep where do we go. And she this whole in the whole album is like takes inspiration from the Babadook which is a 2014 horror film about a single mother and her child that fall into a deep deep paranoia when an eerie children's book titled Mr. Babadook manifests in their home.
And so she took inspiration from that into the music cover like that one cover the songs the feeling of the songs the music videos and this Barry a Friend music video really really really um is kind of like the main music video that we see that relates to the Babadook. I haven't seen the Babadook so I could be completely wrong but I think so. I feel like I heard her talking about um the Babadook in relation to this music video. And so this music video is kind of is it's really hard to explain but it's so cool.
It's um Billy like being possessed but also doing the possessing if that makes any sense. She said that this music video is from the perspective of the monster under your bed and she went on to say that I also confessed that I'm this monster because I'm my I'm my own worst enemy. I might be under your bed too. I might be the monster under your bed too.
And so it's like whoa she's it's just so interesting to think about um she's just like you watching the music video you totally get that she's being possessed something's being happening and there's this insane scene in the music video where Billy is in the hallway of like an old apartment complex or something and she literally spins like not like not like a twirl like a little vertical world she like is in a harness but you can't see the harness in the shot. She is in a harness and she rotates upside down and then rotates back up like a cartwheel but like slow and she's not moving her arms or legs. It's so cool. It's so cool.
I wish I might read my absolute dream is to see one of her music videos be made like that would be so cool too. That would be so cool. But that is my dream. Um it's insane it's insane what she does in her music videos.
Um and so this also yeah I think this song is the song that she's talking about relates to like this whole sweet paralysis idea. Um there's a lyric in the song that kind of visualizes that where it says my limbs all froze and my eyes won't close and then it's like whoa because it's like your wake but you can't move. Okay the next music video I want to talk about is called NDA. This song is on her new album.
Happy other number. It's about like having a relationship and not being public about it henceforth the NDA nondisclosure agreement um I don't know if that's right I think it's nondisclosure agreement um and so this this music video is so insane. It's Billy standing in the middle of the road at like night um and she's standing in the middle of the road. She's singing this song right cars start zooming past her like zooming past her at a very fast speed.
They're flying by her. They're driving around her. They're driving in circles. They're driving straight.
They're driving. They're like creating this chaos and they're smoking everywhere. It's a very interesting music video and what makes it even more insane and even more cool and even more just mind blowing is that Billy like that was real. Billy if you watch the video you like are like is this real like did she really do that but then like she released like behind the scenes videos of cars actually zooming by her like she's standing in the middle of her own.
There was obviously like doctors on set but on on standby but she she like the cars in the music video the cars get pretty close to her like like it's like it's it's not the safest thing and you probably shouldn't do it but it's like it looks so cool. It looks so insane and then the last music video I want to talk about is possibly one of my favorite music videos ever. It's definitely my favorite one of my favorite music videos that Billy has released. I think it's tied between happier than ever and very friend and happier than ever.
Tidal track of her second album soft album it's so it's so amazing. It's so amazing. It's so it starts off. I talked about it in the last episode how the song is kind of like into parts like it starts off slower it starts off mourning the relationship and then as it moves on it gets into this like more intense part more like I don't need you like you didn't treat me right like all this like kind of like self-realization period and so during the like first part that's like kind of slower and mourning and mourning the relationship it's like she Billy is on a phone call on a phone call in her in like a living room or something and so she's on the phone call and as this as the slower part ends she gets off the phone she opens the door immediately water comes rushing in the room like it starts flooding like the room starts flooding Billy has to swim out of her swim out of her house and like swim to fresh air and she and it's that specific part where she she opens the door the front door and water comes pouring down that part is so cool it's so cool because it was real also like they like I mean I say it's real but like in like it sounds real but like looking at the video it's like whoa I can't believe someone did that but she opens the door and the water comes rushing in and that part is so cool it's so cool and um she swims to the top and then she's at she's at the top it's raining she's on the roof of her house and she's on the roof and she's just standing on the roof she's singing she's dancing it's like this whole like just big release like it's just this big get your energy out like release all the emotions like let go of this relationship it's so so cool and she in the way it's edited it's like it cuts to different angles on the on different beats it's so cool it's so cool I definitely recommend watching please watch it I beg you it's so cool um okay those are the music video I'm talking about I can talk about so many more but I'm just gonna talk about those because if I did talk about the other ones I'd be there I'd be here for like a million visually an hours okay moving on tours these been on a couple tours I'm gonna talk about a couple of them I just said she's been on a couple tours I'm gonna talk about a couple of them that doesn't make sense anyway I'm gonna talk about two three or four of them so the first tour that I went to see her on is called When We All Fall Sleep Tour which comes from The When We All Fall Sleep Where Do We Go?
Album and it's the first part of that question When We All Fall Sleep it was from April to November 2019 and she had 17 international shows and 18 USA shows if you think about it doing what 25 35 I'm not gonna math wait 10 plus 10 equals 27 plus 8 15 20 plus 15 equals 35 that's like but she did 35 shows that's kind of crazy um anyway so she did that super fun great great shows I went to the show in Mary Moore in Redmond but in Mary Moore Park it was not over in you it was super fun um anyway that was fun her next album her next album her next tour is the second half of the album which is called Where Do We Go? It Was The Where Do We Go? Tour um unfortunately that was cancelled after three shows because of covid and she just cancelled the rest of the tour because it like it was a smart thing to do like it was easier to especially the way that Billy since Billy was releasing a new album it was easier to cancel that tour and like release the album and then go on a tour for that album then go on a tour for her old album when she has a new album that makes sense um and so speaking of new album and new tour she announced her happier the never tour which is so much bigger than her other tours it's 35 USA shows and 32 international shows that's insane that's insane 65 67 shows around the world I couldn't do that that's insane um she is I mean she's not going to 35 different locations she's doing I don't know how many locations she is but I know she's going to a place and doing multiple shows there like she's coming to Seattle she's doing two shows in Seattle I think she's doing I think she's doing three two or three shows in Los Angeles she's doing a bunch in the O2 I think she's doing like four something in the O2 I think she's going to the O2 going somewhere and then coming back to the O2 the O2 is in a re-nunlondon by the way if you didn't know that and then so yeah that tour hasn't happened yet but I'm excited for it too because I can't wait to see her perform her new songs live um and then next I want to talk about the Grammys Grammys are so cool um I mean yes Grammys are um an award that you can win if you're an artist or a producer or a composer or whoever you might be within the music industry and so Billy has been nominated for 10 Grammys and has won seven that's insane like Grammys are very hard to win let alone get nominated for and she's been nominated for 10 and is won seven like that just proves how good of an artist she is like like like like Grammys are like the top of the top like it's like it's it's it's a struggle to get nominated for many many many reasons to get nominated it's a struggle to get nominated but Billy is one majority of her nominations which is insane um and so she won five of them in 2019 she won Best New Artist but Record of the Year for Bad Guy album of the year for When We All Fall Sleep Where Do We Go song of the year for Bad Guy and Best Pop Bocal Album for When We All Fall Sleep Where Do We Go those were the five she won in 2019 and in 2020 she won Record of the Year for Everything I Wanted and Best Song Written For Visual Media which was No Time To Die which is the James Bond theme song that she wrote and so that's pretty cool that's really cool I forget which one it was but one of her 2020 um one of her 2020 Grammy wins Ringo Starr gave to her like he announced it that is so cool Ringo Starr if you don't know hopefully you do I will be very sad if you don't Ringo Starr is a beetle like he's a part of the Beatles he gave Billy a Grammy that's so cool I want to be Ringo Starr um yeah that's insane and then more some of the stuff she's done most recently is the Met Gala which is a whole thing in itself but she was she was a Met Gala Co-Chair with Timothy Chalamet, Naomi Osaka and Amanda Gorman who are Timothy's an actor and Naomi I believe he was a tennis player and Amanda is a activist and that's so cool that's so cool the Met Gala is so cool she wore so the theme this year was for the Met Gala was In America, Alexicon of Fashion and so she wore like a big ginormous beige gown that had this humongous train it was kind of cinched at the top and then from her hips down it was a huge train it took up like 80 percent of the carpet when she was walking it's gorgeous and she it was inspired by a holiday Barbie which you totally you totally get if you see the dress um you totally get the holly Barbie inspiration and so she wore that on the red carpet into the dinner and then at the after party she wore a like red gown that didn't didn't have as big of a train but it was a red gown and it had like a slit and the dress on her right leg I believe um and both of those gowns were gorgeous and she was she did it with Oscar de la Renta and something so cool that she did was that she she said she was only gonna work with Oscar de la Renta if they like vowed to stop using fur on their work so like I don't I I'm not explaining it well and I'm blanking on what it what the actual wording is but like basically Billy's working Billy working with them for the Met Gala Billy's working with them for the Met Gala in exchange for them to not use fur anymore maybe it's leather I don't know it's something to do with animals like vegan vegan leather maybe faux fur I don't know I forget what I forget the specific specifics I don't think that's a whole word I forget the specifics of it but I know they're like not using any animal related products anymore which is super cool super good for the environment um and then she also has done a million bajillion festivals recently she's done the Austin City Living Festival iHeart Radio Festival Governors Ball Global Citizen Festival Firefied Music Festival Life is Beautiful Life is Beautiful Festival Music Midtown Festival she's on a bunch and so I think she just finished ALC Festival like two weekends ago last weekend maybe I forget um so that's insane music festivals confuse me I mean they're fun and they're great I don't want to go to them but they confuse me how like they change the sets that quickly I mean I guess they have like time to practice and like people don't go on right after the other but it's still pretty fast turnaround and usually for like concerts and stuff they usually have like the whole day to do it I don't know it's confusing I'd love to see it I'd love to see it in action and then a couple things she is upcoming she's gonna do the nightmare before Christmas show in Los Angeles at the Rose Bowl I believe not the Rose Bowl the Hollywood Bowl I think the Hollywood Bowl she's gonna be playing Sally and it's like a concert thing where she's gonna sing Sally song from the nightmare before Christmas I've never seen the nightmare before Christmas so I don't know if it's a song that's come that's been made up for this concert or if it's in this actual movie but I will find out and let you know because I feel like I don't this is a Tim Burton movie right I don't I feel like I feel like Tim Burton isn't a musical I don't think he's a musical kind of guy um anyway I'll find out and she also has a tour coming up the happier the never tour starts in February that's not for at all it's let's see this is October I mean of November December January February that's five months away she's that's crazy I'm excited to see her outfits for this tour because if you uh Billy is very notorious for like not showing off her body if that makes sense like not in an inappropriate way she just has always worn baggy clothing and at the at the um at the um um at the festival she's been doing recently she's been changing up her look a little bit but not drastically so I want to see if she's like gonna continue to keep it this like in between or if she's gonna change it or if she's gonna go back to what it was like she's been wearing big shirts but she's been wearing like biker shorts which are like long tight shirts you probably know what they are you you've probably seen a biker before um but she's been wearing like biker shorts with like a big baggy shirt that like covers her biker shorts I don't know it's interesting but anyway I'm excited to see them because she always has like really cool patterns on her outfits um they're just so cool to look at like and she had she had like a black light shirt not a black light shirt like it didn't have a black light on it but like when it was in front of black lights it was like neon and pink and stuff it was really cool um yeah anyways this was just a quick episode it wasn't really quick it was actually quite long but anyways this was the rest of the rest of the rest of the week with Billy Eilish um I'm Ellie I'm your host of this awesome show Broken Record and it's been great um I'm probably gonna do another artist of the week next
