Deuteronomy 31   English Standard Version     31 So Moses continued to speak these words to all Israel. 2 And he said to them, "I am 120 years old today. I am no longer able to go out and come in. The Lord has said to me, 'You shall not go over this Jordan.' 3 The Lord your God himself will go over before you. He will destroy these nations before you, so that you shall dispossess them, and Joshua will go over at your head, as the Lord has spoken. 4 And the Lord will do to them as he did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land, when he destroyed them. 5 And the Lord will give them over to you, and you shall do to them according to the whole commandment that I have commanded you. 6 Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you." 7 Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, "Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land that the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall put them in possession of it. 8 It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed." 9 Then Moses wrote this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 And Moses commanded them, "At the end of every seven years, at the set time in the year of release, at the Feast of Booths, 11 when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God at the place that he will choose, you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing. 12 Assemble the people, men, women, and little ones, and the sojourner within your towns, that they may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, and be careful to do all the words of this law, 13 and that their children, who have not known it, may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, as long as you live in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess." 14 And the Lord said to Moses, "Behold, the days approach when you must die. Call Joshua and present yourselves in the tent of meeting, that I may commission him." And Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the tent of meeting. 15 And the Lord appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud. And the pillar of cloud stood over the entrance of the tent. 16 And the Lord said to Moses, "Behold, you are about to lie down with your fathers. Then this people will rise and whore after the foreign gods among them in the land that they are entering, and they will forsake me and break my covenant that I have made with them. 17 Then my anger will be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them and hide my face from them, and they will be devoured. And many evils and troubles will come upon them, so that they will say in that day, 'Have not these evils come upon us because our God is not among us?' 18 And I will surely hide my face in that day because of all the evil that they have done, because they have turned to other gods. 19 "Now therefore write this song and teach it to the people of Israel. Put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the people of Israel. 20 For when I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to give to their fathers, and they have eaten and are full and grown fat, they will turn to other gods and serve them, and despise me and break my covenant. 21 And when many evils and troubles have come upon them, this song shall confront them as a witness (for it will live unforgotten in the mouths of their offspring). For I know what they are inclined to do even today, before I have brought them into the land that I swore to give." 22 So Moses wrote this song the same day and taught it to the people of Israel. 23 And the Lord commissioned Joshua the son of Nun and said, "Be strong and courageous, for you shall bring the people of Israel into the land that I swore to give them. I will be with you." 24 When Moses had finished writing the words of this law in a book to the very end, 25 Moses commanded the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, 26 "Take this Book of the Law and put it by the side of the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there for a witness against you. 27 For I know how rebellious and stubborn you are. Behold, even today while I am yet alive with you, you have been rebellious against the Lord. How much more after my death! 28 Assemble to me all the elders of your tribes and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears and call heaven and earth to witness against them. 29 For I know that after my death you will surely act corruptly and turn aside from the way that I have commanded you. And in the days to come evil will befall you, because you will do what is evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger through the work of your hands." 30 Then Moses spoke the words of this song until they were finished, in the ears of all the assembly of Israel:   Proverbs 15   English Standard Version     15 A soft answer turns away wrath,     but a harsh word stirs up anger. 2 The tongue of the wise commends knowledge,     but the mouths of fools pour out folly. 3 The eyes of the Lord are in every place,     keeping watch on the evil and the good. 4 A gentle tongue is a tree of life,     but perverseness in it breaks the spirit. 5 A fool despises his father's instruction,     but whoever heeds reproof is prudent. 6 In the house of the righteous there is much treasure,     but trouble befalls the income of the wicked. 7 The lips of the wise spread knowledge;     not so the hearts of fools. 8 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord,     but the prayer of the upright is acceptable to him. 9 The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord,     but he loves him who pursues righteousness. 10 There is severe discipline for him who forsakes the way;     whoever hates reproof will die. 11 Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the Lord;     how much more the hearts of the children of man! 12 A scoffer does not like to be reproved;     he will not go to the wise. 13 A glad heart makes a cheerful face,     but by sorrow of heart the spirit is crushed. 14 The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge,     but the mouths of fools feed on folly. 15 All the days of the afflicted are evil,     but the cheerful of heart has a continual feast. 16 Better is a little with the fear of the Lord     than great treasure and trouble with it. 17 Better is a dinner of herbs where love is     than a fattened ox and hatred with it. 18 A hot-tempered man stirs up strife,     but he who is slow to anger quiets contention. 19 The way of a sluggard is like a hedge of thorns,     but the path of the upright is a level highway. 20 A wise son makes a glad father,     but a foolish man despises his mother. 21 Folly is a joy to him who lacks sense,     but a man of understanding walks straight ahead. 22 Without counsel plans fail,     but with many advisers they succeed. 23 To make an apt answer is a joy to a man,     and a word in season, how good it is! 24 The path of life leads upward for the prudent,     that he may turn away from Sheol beneath. 25 The Lord tears down the house of the proud     but maintains the widow's boundaries. 26 The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord,     but gracious words are pure. 27 Whoever is greedy for unjust gain troubles his own household,     but he who hates bribes will live. 28 The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer,     but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things. 29 The Lord is far from the wicked,     but he hears the prayer of the righteous. 30 The light of the eyes rejoices the heart,     and good news refreshes the bones. 31 The ear that listens to life-giving reproof     will dwell among the wise. 32 Whoever ignores instruction despises himself,     but he who listens to reproof gains intelligence. 33 The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom,     and humility comes before honor.   Psalm 139   English Standard Version     To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. 139 O Lord, you have searched me and known me! 2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up;     you discern my thoughts from afar. 3 You search out my path and my lying down     and are acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even before a word is on my tongue,     behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. 5 You hem me in, behind and before,     and lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;     it is high; I cannot attain it. 7 Where shall I go from your Spirit?     Or where shall I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there!     If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the morning     and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 even there your hand shall lead me,     and your right hand shall hold me. 11 If I say, "Surely the darkness shall cover me,     and the light about me be night," 12 even the darkness is not dark to you;     the night is bright as the day,     for darkness is as light with you. 13 For you formed my inward parts;     you knitted me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works;     my soul knows it very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret,     intricately woven in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them,     the days that were formed for me,     when as yet there was none of them. 17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!     How vast is the sum of them! 18 If I would count them, they are more than the sand.     I awake, and I am still with you. 19 Oh that you would slay the wicked, O God!     O men of blood, depart from me! 20 They speak against you with malicious intent;     your enemies take your name in vain. 21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord?     And do I not loathe those who rise up against you? 22 I hate them with complete hatred;     I count them my enemies. 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart!     Try me and know my thoughts! 24 And see if there be any grievous way in me,     and lead me in the way everlasting!
