Architecture Practice: Survival Brain versus Learning Brain

from Talk Architecture · host Naziaty

Send us Fan MailThe main protagonists in the architecture design studio are the master (tutor) and apprentice (student). The tutor needs to take time to coach the student so that the latter work on their "learning brain rather than the survival brain". When left unattended the student falls back to bad habits or previous ways of designing that may not be enough for the level that he or she is in and needed to progress further. In order to develop the skills to a greater extent, if not taught in the first year (where it is usually to do with artistic process rather than architecture design process) or lack the quality of teaching-learning necessary to discover the important learning such as tectonics and technical aspects of architecture. We often call this detailed design or design development stage. This episode went further into why the survival brain ( not growing and just designing by relying on SketchUp and other 3D digital software) is "cheating" and needs to be addressed.  © 2022 Talk Architecture, Author: Naziaty Mohd Yaacob Photo (artwork): Luis, the Year 3 coordinator regarding the FAUP studio curriculum in 2015 taken by Naziaty Mohd YaacobSupport the showDo subscribe for premium content and special features which will help to support and sustain Talk Architecture podcast on a more in-depth explanation on design thesis and processes. Bauer, Florian Schneider, Axel Weber & Dr. Tillman Bardt The Newmorrow PodCast is more than a podcast — it's a platform for open dialog on the future of our business, a platform for those building what doesn’t exist yet. Here, we share and embrace our passion for the hospitality industry, but we won’t romanticize the journey. We ask the tough questions, confront uncomfortable truths, and prepare for a future that resists easy answers. We believe that the tougher and wilder times become, the more openly, honestly and humanely people need to talk to each other and act together. We believe, openness, togetherness, and truthfulness should also be cornerstones of a professional community to develop our utopian idea of „open source“. This is a space where visionaries don’t just imagine the future — they wrestle with the paradoxes that shape it: success vs. happiness, data vs. instinct, stability vs. reinvention. Join leaders, entrepreneurs, and thinkers as they share not what made them — but what’s actively shaping them, now and next. So tune in
