Archivist’s Table Episode 6: Walking in the Sun

from The Archivist's Porch · host La Maison de Lumière

I can finally walk with them in the sun. When we first begin exploring our family history, we rarely realize how much darkness we are wading through. We carry boxes of unresolved questions, inherited wounds, and stories fractured by time. We spend hours staring at cold columns and faded records, searching for people who seem hidden just beyond our reach. But the ultimate transformation from researcher and preservationist to archivist is that the carrying stops.Walking in the sun means giving your ancestors the gift of liberation.Think about what happens when the stories of your people remain scattered across courthouses, churches, family Bibles, photographs, and forgotten files. When we allow the evidence to lead and gather those pieces into a single repository, something changes. We become caretakers of memory and stewards of continuity. With the authority of an archivist, we can finally say:You are recorded. You are cited. You are preserved.Their story is no longer fragmented. They can finally be encountered as whole people.By documenting what exists and bringing it out of the basement of time, we allow them to step into the daylight. And in doing so, we free ourselves from the exhausting burden of trying to defend, explain, or repair their lives. We can finally simply walk beside them.My training insight for you today is simple:Look at your files and ask yourself: Are you still keeping them hidden inside the dark boxes of your anxiety?Step into your authority. Build the repository. Lay down the burden of carrying what was never yours to fix.Create a space where you can turn up the music, enjoy their company, and watch them soak in the sun.In This Session, We Explore:The Record: Referencing baptismal records, photographs, and land records as points of archival reflection. The Observation: Moving beyond the exhausting cycle of carrying unresolved generational trauma. The Revelation: Realizing that archiving whole people replaces a historic ache with liberation, allowing us to finally walk beside them in the light.Remember our ancestral mantra:Love them as descendants.Preserve them as archivists.Let the evidence lead us.
