But underneath the fake photographs sits a much older record: excavation reports, museum specimens, town histories, newspaper accounts and Native oral traditions, written down on two continents by people who never had any contact with each other.This documentary follows that paper trail with three researchers who have spent years in the archives. Hugh Newman and Jim Vieira, co-authors of Giants on Record, trace accounts from Deerfield, Massachusetts to the 1950s university digs that named the "Adena jaw," and across the Atlantic to reports near Stonehenge. Jeffrey Wilson takes Harvard's own photograph of the main burial at Serpent Mound, Ohio and measures it against an artifact of known size. Then an archaeologist answers with a single femur that nobody can identify by catalog number.So if this many accounts exist, where are the bones? The answers include repatriation under NAGPRA, a real and legitimate law; remains that crumbled to dust when they were lifted; and Ales Hrdlicka, the Smithsonian anthropologist who declared the subject closed. The second half turns from bones to what people built and told: Stonehenge's oldest recorded name, the Giant's Dance; the great mounds of Ohio and West Virginia; Vine Deloria on Native traditions of giants; and a Spanish record from 1500s Florida of a chief's family between seven and eight feet tall.No one in this film claims the case is closed.
