Are our sentencing laws too lenient on sex offenders? (24 August, 2020)

*TRIGGER WARNING*  This weeks episode discuss sexual violence.  Last year Hamzeh Bahrami tied up and raped a 10-year-old girl multiple times in a Blair Athol toilet block. After initially denying the crime Bahrami eventually pleaded guilty. He was recently sentenced and given a jail term of four years with a minimum of three. However, he can be out in as little two years with time served. Bahrami was given a 40% sentence reduction due to pleading guilty within four weeks of his arrest. In light of this case, the State Opposition Leader Peter Malinauskas attempted to pass a private member's bill to lower the sentence reduction clause for serious crimes. We spoke to Mr Malinauskas about the outcome of that bill.  Wavelength also spoke to Sonya Ryan, founder of the Carly Ryan Foundation about what else needs to be done in regards to our sentencing laws to help protect us from the dangers of sexual predators.  This week Andrew also had a chat with BDO about the pro's and con's of withdrawing your super early due to financial hardship in the wake of COVID-19.
