This video is brought to you by Nebula. Today, China imposes a tally of tariffs on the European Union, Florida raises an intensely powerful hurricane, and Israel expands its round invasion of Lebanon. From Tl.R. News, this is your daily week for Tuesday, 8th October 2024.
This is a growing of a trade war between the European Union and China, after Italy disagrees between post-terrorism Chinese electric vehicles last week, bouncing China to announce today that it would put for visual tariffs on imports of European brandy. Back on Friday, a sufficient number of EU member states voted in favor of the European Commission's proposal to impose anti-substitatives all up to 35.3% on imports of electric vehicles manufacturing China, on top of an existing 10% levy. Then, countries including heavy rights like France, Italy and Poland supported the measure, while five left by Germany and Hungary voted against the tariffs, and 12 countries of Spain. The tariffs are expected to come into force at the end of this month, and could remain in place for five years, with a ranging from 7.8% extra duties on Tesla vehicles manufacturing China to 35.3% for electric vehicles made by Chinese government's AIC, which includes British brand M.G.
The move comes after a year long investigation by the EU into the electric vehicle market, with European Commission accusing China of providing its EV industry with un-thermarket assaulting state subsidies. China rejected this, calling EU's investigation artificially constructed and exaggerated, and the tariffs a naked protectionist act. The EU's new tariffs will cost car makers billions of extra dollars to bring their vehicles into the European Union. They pose a significant challenge for the Chinese government, as the Chinese market has an estimated surplus of three million battery electric vehicles that cannot be absorbed by its own market, so high import duties limit China's ability to offload the excess vehicles into the European market.
In an escalating tip for tariffs, on Tuesday China announced provisional tariffs of up to 39% on European brandies, including brands like many Martin, Martel and Hennessy. An investigation by the Chinese Communist Institute said that Europe was dumping brandy in China, causing substantial damage to China's own brandy sector. China could go further by targeting pork and dairy products, which have also been subject to anti-dumping investigations. China's responses particularly focus on French brands, which France having supported the investigation into and tariffs on Chinese maybe EVs.
Countries like Germany that have opposed the new tariffs are perhaps less at risk of being exposed to Italian-Chinese actions. Regardless, the European Commission has said negotiations with China will continue in the attempt to find an alternative resolution to the disputes. However, the target exposes the challenges EU faces in trying to protect its own crucial industries whilst also safeguarding Chinese investments, as well as highlighting a rift between different EU member states on key strategic questions. There's more on the way but remember to subscribe, and we'll take a few tomorrow.
