Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia

In this episode, we explore the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, a medieval Armenian state that emerged along the Mediterranean and became an important center of commerce, diplomacy, and culture. We examine how Cilician Armenia built close ties with the Crusader states and later allied with the Mongol Ilkhanate in an effort to resist the growing power of the Mamluk Sultanate. The episode also looks at the kingdom’s adoption of Western feudal customs, its complex relationship with the Catholic Church, and the religious and political tensions these connections created. Finally, we trace the famines, sieges, and military pressures that weakened the kingdom, culminating in the fall of its capital, Sis, in 1375, while considering Cilicia’s lasting importance in Armenian history and national identity.
