Dr. Shanda McManus is an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine and author of the forthcoming memoir Brother Epistles (June 2026). A powerful advocate for health equity, she educates medical and community audiences on weathering, narrative medicine, and how to dismantle health disparities. Her book, Brother Epistles, examines gun violence as a public health crisis through intimate letters to her brother Monir, who was killed in a drive-by shooting in North Philadelphia in 1992. Drawing on both personal grief and her two decades of clinical experience, the book explores the systemic factors that disproportionately affect young men in urban communities. Dr. Shanda will join the show to further discuss the context of her book. Her book will be released on June 23rd, 2026.
