In one case, Recorder Patrick Harrington QC said: "Benefit fraud is rife and costs honest hardworking people a lot of money." According to figures from the Department for Work and Pensions, £183.5bn was spent on all benefits payments in Britain in 2018-19. Around £2.3bn of that was overpaid due to fraud, which is roughly 1.2% of the amount spent.
