The Sodre Brothers were lucky in their nephew, Vasco da Gama, who was well respected in the Portugese government for opening up the spice trade for them from India. The two brothers were appointed captains in his fleet as a token of the admiration that the king, Dom Manuel, had for their entire family thanks to da Gama’s accomplishments.
