Pod pojmom intermezzo si v hudbe dnes predstavujeme menšiu skladbu slúžiacu ako most medzi dvomi podstatnejšími a časovo rozsiahlejšími útvarmi. V 19. storočí sa intermezzo úplne osamostatnilo a získalo podobu charakteristickej skladby, tak ako, napríklad, lístok do pamätníka, prelúdium či nokturno. Bohatú históriu vývinu tohto žánru od jeho renesančného predchodcu intermédia až po Brittenove "morské" interlúdiá priblíži Peter Zagar.
