Kianga Jinaki is a fiber artist, a storyteller, a doll maker, a community organizer, a community artist, and an all-around extraordinary person. She creates community through her teachings online and in-person, and is a hands-on, fully-involved community member. She joins the Stitch Please podcast to share how she got her start in the art world as a fiber and needle artist. Kianga also shares her story of creating her first doll for her daughter and the process of creation that happened behind the scenes. Kianga also talks about the opportunities she’s received to travel around the world, furthering her craft in Ghana and South Africa. This opened up our conversation as we discussed Kianga’s curiosity and hunger not just for living her everyday life as a Black woman, but also to learned and rediscover her ancestry and legacy through the mediums of art and literature. This episode is a true exploration of art, culture, and legacy. So tune in, get curious, and get inspired by this truly powerful conversation.
