Artemis II marks a historic return to deep space exploration as the first crewed mission to the lunar vicinity in more than half a century. This ten-day journey, which launched on April 1, 2026, at 6:35 p.m. EDT, serves as a critical test flight to validate systems for future lunar landings and eventual missions to Mars.The mission is powered by the Space Launch System (SLS), a massive rocket that carried the Orion spacecraft into orbit. A vital part of the spacecraft is a service module provided by international partners, which supplies the crew with electricity, air, water, and propulsion.The four-person crew reflects a more diverse era of space exploration. It includes Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen. This team includes the first woman, the first person of color, and the first non-American to travel beyond low Earth orbit toward the moon.During the initial phases of the flight, the crew conducted proximity operations, manually piloting the Orion capsule to test its handling qualities near the rocket's spent upper stage. Following these maneuvers, the spacecraft executes a Trans-Lunar Injection (TLI) burn, a critical engine firing that commits the mission to its journey toward the moon.The flight follows a free-return trajectory, meaning the spacecraft will loop around the far side of the moon and use gravity to slingshot back toward Earth without needing a major engine burn to return home. At its closest approach, the crew will fly between 4,000 and 6,000 miles above the lunar surface, conducting extensive observations and capturing images of the moon and Earth.On board, the astronauts test new life-support systems, radiation shielding, and exercise equipment designed for deep-space travel. They wear advanced orange pressure suits designed for protection during launch and reentry, which are also capable of sustaining them for several days in the event of a cabin depressurization.The mission is scheduled to conclude with a high-speed reentry into the atmosphere. The capsule will splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Francisco, where recovery teams will be waiting to collect the astronauts and the spacecraft.
