Arthur Seyss-Inquart: Nazi Ruler of the Netherlands and Architect of Occupation Terror

from World History: True Stories of the 20th Century · host World History

Arthur Seyss-Inquart was one of the most powerful Nazi officials in occupied Europe, helping orchestrate the annexation of Austria and the persecution of more than 100,000 Dutch Jews during World War II. Born in 1892, he rose from a Viennese lawyer to one of the most influential Nazi administrators in Europe. After the failed Nazi coup in Austria in 1934, Seyss-Inquart positioned himself as the key mediator between Austrian conservatives and the Nazi underground. When Hitler prepared to annex Austria in March 1938, Seyss-Inquart became the crucial instrument that made the Anschluss appear “legal,” signing the law that dissolved Austria into the Third Reich. His reward was immediate power — first as Chancellor of Austria, then as Reich Governor of the Ostmark, where he enforced anti-Jewish decrees and helped send thousands to concentration camps. His influence grew even further after the 1940 German invasion of the Netherlands, when Hitler appointed him Reichskommissar. In this role, Seyss-Inquart oversaw the deportation of more than 100,000 Dutch Jews to Auschwitz and Sobibor, the crushing of the Dutch resistance, mass forced labor, and the brutal starvation winter of 1944–45. His administration became one of the most destructive and deadly in occupied Europe.Captured in May 1945, Seyss-Inquart faced trial at Nuremberg for crimes against humanity, war crimes, and crimes of aggression. During the proceedings he attempted to portray himself as a reluctant administrator, but the evidence showed a man deeply committed to Nazi ideology and central to the persecution and murder of civilians across Europe. Convicted on multiple counts, he was sentenced to death. On 16 October 1946, Arthur Seyss-Inquart was executed by hanging, his final act closing one of the darkest careers in the Nazi regime. This episode is part of the series High-Ranking Officials of the Third Reich.Watch the full documentary and explore hundreds of historical films at:WorldHistory.tv
