Pour l’accompagner dans cette aventure, son premier album intégral de compositions originales, Rob Clearfield s’est entouré de musiciens doués pour l’exploration d’univers aux limites diffuses : Greg Ward au saxophone alto, Sam Weber à la basse et Quin Kirchner à la batterie. Outre sa musique dont on pourrait dire  qu’elle est savante mais sans que la technicité l’emporte sur la sensibilité, Ashes and Diamonds est proposé avec un livret enrichi des saisissantes illustrations de l’artiste-peintre Emily Pfaff ainsi que des partitions annotées des différentes compositions. Il est bien sûr conseillé de se procurer l’album, sorti sur le label Ears and Eyes Records, mais il est aussi très chaleureusement recommandé de se procurer des places pour assister aux deux concerts  de sortie française, le premier à Marseille, au Club 27, ce 13 décembre, et le second à Paris, au Sunside le lendemain, avec l’enthousiasmant line-up suivant: Olga Amelchenko au saxophone, Sam Weber à la basse, Fred Pasqua à la batterie. Ne manquez pas les occasions d’écouter la musique de Rob Clearfield et s’il fallait encore une bonne raison de vous y encourager, voici la composition qui referme son album Ashes and Diamonds. Elle est intitulée Furioso, c’est un terme technique plutôt rare dans le jazz même très contemporain mais il lui va très bien, tant la furie peut couver sous un apparent velours comme la lave en fusion sous son écrin de roche.
