But on August 24, 1869, Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York received his patent for the waffle iron. His invention made waffles more readily available. Eaten throughout the world, a waffle is a leavened batter or dough. When cooked between two patterned plates, the dough bakes in the waffle's characteristic uniform impressed surface. For the serious waffles lovers in the world, one amazing place is Belgium, specifically the capital city of Brussels. Belgian waffles are thicker and fluffier with deep grid pockets, traditionally made with a yeast or whipped egg white batter while regular aka American waffles are thinner and denser with a cake-like texture and shallow squares, typically made with baking powder and quick batter.
