Crazy. I'm crazy. Well, welcome to Play Me. The final level, the big boss.

The big boss for now. For now. Dan here with the Doctor of Libations. Well, take it easy.

Rob Avon. That's me. The doctor's in. That's a little pre-roll secret just for me and my co-host.

That's right. You guys may get a note about it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I forgot to disrespect you at the top.

We're rounding out our video game filmic adaptation series of Videoic Games. And we're doing so with Assassin's Creed. Assassin's Creed. Rob, I have a few things I'd like to say to you up top.

Okay. First of all, listeners can probably hear it in my voice that I'm sick. Do you know why? Why?

Because I went not of my own free will into the Animus. Oh, no. Too many times, yeah. Oh boy.

I relived my past life of a guy choking on a hand bone. In Southern Italy. Yeah. And then a different past life.

Same thing happened. That's how all of your ancestors went. Yes. Yeah, no, it's, yeah.

I mean, that happens. Hand bones. They're real big, but they're so delicious. They're so delicious.

And they have like the hole in them, you think. No problem. I just got to. Yeah, if I can really help you.

Yeah, probably. Yeah. I'm on Easy Street here. The other thing is that I have a few things I'd like you to remember as we're talking about this.

Okay. Okay. First is that where other men blindly follow the truth. Remember that nothing is true.

Okay. Got that? Second, where other men are limited by their morality or law, you remember that everything is permitted. Huh.

Kind of badass. And then third thing to remember is that we work in the darkness to serve the light because we are podcasters. That's like a blank check. Oh, yeah, it is.

Isn't it? Got it. Got it. Got it.

I leave it in double it. This is, well, that's also it. This is, it's not a good, I mean, this whole thing is stinks of blank check. This is a totemic movie for them.

Right. I don't luckily remember anything. I don't know about it. I went into this clean, basically.

So did I. I don't think, do they ever do an episode on this? If they did, I truly don't remember it. Yeah.

I don't know. I've never seen this movie before watching it for this episode and I've never played the game. Oh, no, Dan. No, I just, I don't know.

Actually, I got to say for, you know, as bad as this is. Yeah. I was, I was pretty leaning forward in my chair. I got to tell you, for the first like half hour or so, I was pretty in on this movie.

I was like, what is the big deal? What is everybody talking about? Like, I saw a letter box, a bunch of like bad reviews, like one stars and shit. Like, I don't like, is this movie good?

I don't like, what is, what are you guys talking about? No, it's not. As soon as, as soon as they get into the animus and the whole, they just start throwing shit at you, they also, oh, God, help me. All the frickin.

Um, I mean, the premise is psychotic, right? The apple of Eden. Yeah. Right.

That's the McGuffin here. They want, uh, they're two wearing factions. Such a McGuffin. What a guff.

What a guff. It is. What a guff. Yes.

Um, the assassins are the libertarians, and they, like, personal freedom and individual choice. Yeah. And the templars are the 90 state, and they just want everyone to do what they say. Yeah.

So there's a lot of like, I mean, weirdly like the central message of the movie is like violences go good and necessary. Yeah. Yeah. Do you think that's a true statement that it's not necessarily good, but necessary.

Um, well if Jeremy irons is up to his old tricks. Well, that's the thing. What am I supposed to do? Yeah, I don't know.

Maybe we'll answer that big question by the end of this episode. By the end of the movie. Yeah. Yeah, this, I mean, right off of that, McGuffin being the apple of Eden, not an actual apple, but like a sort of metallic, you know, ancient artifact that also has like swirly, wirly powers that we kind of see for a second, but not really.

One of the, yeah, yeah. So the whole time they're talking about it, the reason that the 2016 people want it is that it contains the genetic code that controls, like it maps the genetic code that controls human free will. So if you have that, you can, I guess, switch people's free will off and have a stepford planet. Right.

Two things here. Yeah. Set in 2016. Yeah.

Human genome project. Finished? That's not funny. Yeah, it's done.

Yeah. So it's just like, that's not a gene. That's a philosophical question, baby. Of course.

Second of all, it's not like, well, no second of all, it's just stupid, man. It is kind of, it is just kind of stupid. The idea that like, see, here's my main issue with this movie. I think like the action scenes or whatever are, they're fine.

There's some, there's some fun stuff in there. I like when they were like on the carriage thing and like, you know, they're sort of fighting guys and then they like roll off the cliff and all that kind of shit. Sure. Yeah.

And then the whole escape scene, right? Whatever. But like everything else. Yeah.

Everything in 2016, I would say is unbearable. It's pretty unbearable. Even like big climactic fight scene at the, like as they're escaping the facility or whatever. Yeah.

The fact that all of the guards have crossbows still, why don't you just set the whole movie in 1492? This is my, this was going to be my point. I'm like, why didn't we just watch the movie set in the past? Yeah.

Like why are we cutting away from that? To watch Michael Fassbender do VR. Right. That's silly.

It's very silly. Yeah. Did you like that the company is called Abstergo? No.

I did. You like that? I do. I'm sure it's like, it's got to be like a reference to something because it's like the worst word.

Yeah, of course. Abstergo. Abstergo. Yeah, that sucks.

This movie, right? Directed by Justin Kurzel. Justin Kurzel. What else has he made?

We talked about this, right? He directed that Nick Bath movie. He directed the order, which just came out last year. Like pretty, the order I thought was like a down the middle.

This is exactly what it should be. And it's like, it feels like a void of mood. Like for that, like whatever, we just don't get a lot of movies that are setting like reality. You know?

Like, like, oh, like Jude Law in it is, I mean, he's hamming it up a bit, but he's like this grizzled fucking like US Marshall or FBI agent. And I think, and he's just like, you know, everything in his life is falling apart, alcoholic kind of guy, you know. Sure. But I like seeing Jude Law in that mood.

But yeah, and then I don't know, I don't know anything else that the guy's done. Snowtown murders, haven't seen it. Nick Bath, not for me, et cetera. Not for you.

That's the bird we're talking about. The Scottish play. The Scottish play. I'm more of a, I'm more a fan of Shakespeare's comedy.

I'm sort of a comedy nerd. I love Shakespeare. Yeah. I love actually.

I love that. I'm not much of a comedy nerd. I like the, let's see, my favorite comedy of all, well, it has to be a mid-summer style stream, right? How rival, what farce?

As you like it, that's the one I was trying to think of. So all this to say, like, I don't know, there's no like distinct visual style here. It's just kind of like, it is what it is. It's like a blue and it's gray and the past is orange and yellow.

Exactly. That's all. That's it. It's left the color filter.

Movie written by some guys. Three guys. It's a couple of guys got together in a room. They wrote this.

They hammered it out. I don't, Dan, have you ever played the video game? No, I haven't. This can't be the actual premise of the video game.

It's not. It's not. The whole VR sort of thing is not it, right? Not at all.

So the thing with the game is like, each game is set, I think, in a different time period. Right. That's what I thought it was. Right.

So that is, they're sort of like, nod to that, I guess, is like, how do we like, thred the needle on this? And like, they don't really. We flashback to Andalusia a lot. But besides that, all we really get is Michael K.

Williams being like, I died in the 19th century. Yeah. It was a voodoo, man. Yeah.

And besides that, like, we don't even know where anyone else was in the past or anything like that. Yeah. Yeah. I don't like any of that stuff.

Who's in this movie, Dan? We got Michael Fassbender as Kowlinch. He's got a big dick, right? Yeah.

I think he's got a big dick. He's one of those guys who famously is a big dick, right? He does. He's got a big old hog on him.

Check out that movie, Shame, if you want to see it. Who else? So Fassbender in this. I'm a fan.

I like Fassbender. He's given it more than it deserves, for sure. Yeah. Yeah.

I mean, you played the song that he's singing up top. He really goes for it. He really commits to singing that song. See, up until, even after that, not after that, but up to that point, when he's like, everything is sort of, nothing makes sense.

People are coming out of nowhere and they're saying very cryptic things. And he's like, what is going on here? And then he starts singing the, you know, crazy. Even that, I'm like, all right, I'm still on board here for whatever this, like, it seems like it's going to actually be something, like you're building up to something crazy, like some huge reveal that is going to blow minds here.

The big reveal is that Christopher Columbus took the apple of Eden. That's the big reveal is that it's Christopher Columbus, the ultimate villain. Yeah. Not a nice one.

According to this, no, no. According to this, he's a friend of the assassins and he'll do anything to stop those pesky Templars. Not a good look, I think. No, this is like, I think this might be, I feel like I've heard of it.

I've heard assassins Creed described as like, like this teaches dumb guys to be wrong about history in a lot of ways, like the games do. Can't speak to that, but we just fucked everything up, didn't we? We didn't. Not you and me necessarily.

We fucked up enough on our own, but society as a whole, we were just, we just, you had to have more. We just had to have more. Yeah. We're green little pigs.

Anyway, so we got fast. You got Mary Ann Cottiar. Oh, Gemma Pell. A lady who, the more I thought about it, looks like a cartoon, a caricature of a French woman.

Yeah. She's the most French looking lady I've ever seen. Yeah. What is she?

The titular character from Big Eyes? My goodness. Look at those peepers. Yes, she's extraordinarily French.

Yeah, I don't know. Incra-obla. Incra-obla. I don't know, man.

I think she's fine. I haven't seen her in much of anything. She's got very little to do here, I think. She's like a science lady.

She's a science lady. She's in charge of the, whatever this project is called. What is it called, Dan? I don't know what the project is called, but the machine is called Animus.

Yeah, the Animus Project. We'll call it that, the Animus, which is a giant, like, mechanical arm that you hook up, these descendants of assassins. Yes. And you plug a descendant of an assassin, and he, they will relive the moments from past lives, right?

Yeah. And those moments can be recorded by present-day scientists in order to find out information. Yes. That is complicated, I think.

Very complicated. It's a bit too much. But okay. They put him in a big arm.

It looks like a, even the design of the arm was a little odd. It's very muscular. It looked like a guy's arm. It's just a big old bicep.

Yes. It does. I pick you up. It's a mechanics of the thing too, it doesn't make any sense because it's just like, they wrap like a belt around fast-better, and then they plug that into the mechanical arm.

There's no harness on any other part. It's just like the belts apart. Yeah. I don't know if that's going to hold, man, but it's one of the craziest things I've ever seen.

It's so incredibly stupid. It's pretty dumb. Yeah. And it's not like, you know, I can't imagine you're saving money.

Oh, probably you are. Probably you are. I mean, at this point, like this, uh, uh, abster go, uh, they, they get billions of dollars. Oh, Templar bucks.

Yeah. They get Templar bucks every year. They get billions in Templar bucks. What are we?

I'm out on the harness here. What are we, what are you talking about? I'm more meant like the movie makers, saving money on like location fight scene stuff by just having fast-bender be like, yeah, yeah. Yeah.

But like, but they still film the other stuff. Like it's only, it's, it's a cut with, with fast-bender being like, you know, in a lab. I don't know. Uh, who else Jeremy Irons as Rick in the head of this, uh, lab?

Right? Yeah. He's evil, Rick in evil, Rick in. He's just, he's doing.

He's a little Rick in. All right. Take it easy. Wrap.

He's doing his Jeremy Irons like thing where he's just like, he comes in. He's like a tall slender man. And he, you know, he's almost like a, like an evil Steve Jobs or something where he's just like. Yeah.

And evil Steve Jobs. Yeah. Yeah. He's sort of like, he's lying.

Well, let's set the stakes here. He's lying to Mary on Cultial. Oh, well, right. He is daddy.

Also, he's, he's her daddy. He's her daddy. He is, he's Papa. He is lying to her also.

Yes. Why, she's ahead of this research and she's trying to get these answers and he is giving her all this money and whatever to do it. Yes. Under false pretenses.

He's basically like where the good guy is and she's like, I believe you and nothing could be farther from the truth. Nothing could be farther from. In what world are the Templars, the good guys? I don't know.

I mean, I, isn't that also what the Da Vinci code is about? The Templars being nasty? Yeah. Yeah.

What was going on? With those Templars? Yeah. Around this time.

I mean, they just love religion so much. I guess they do. They're just like, we have, oh my God, we love God so much. We have to kill all of you.

I'm so sorry. I got to say too, the like, I thought the, um, the scene. The like burning scene, what do you call that? Yeah.

I thought that looked fucking great. They were burning. They were going to burn three assassins at the stake. Yeah.

That was like, I thought it looked so good. I was like, more of this. That's what I'm saying is like the action in this and that stuff like that scene and whatever, it looks cool. Yeah.

It looks like it felt similar to like, I don't know, like gladiator and scope where it's just like a big sort of, uh, closet where people are going to watch as these, these three people are set on fire and you know, you have that, that priest guy with the, the monk looking with the bald on top with the, still has a ring of hair. He's all evil and shit. I'm like, I'm in, man. Yeah.

Fuck him. Let's stay here. I don't care about the Abstergo foundation. I don't care about that at all.

Um, also sidebar real quick, uh, all of the stuff in the past takes place in Spain and everybody speaks Spanish. I think that's a mistake. Um, I think I brought it up here before, but I think in dumb movies like this, just emanating some time. Yeah.

100%. I, uh, you didn't like, I did like it because they say all their F F like this. Yeah. I was like, they did it.

They did the one thing I know about if annual, uh, Javier Bardem would be proud of his brother, of the language and his brother, Carlos, who's in the movie a bit. Yeah. I think I may have missed him. I don't know where he was.

He's the, he's like the head assassino, the like mentor, the one where they're like, yes, mentor, mentor, mentor. Yeah. Um, so yeah, you got, um, yeah. I wonder what Carlos, uh, Bardem would sound like.

Hi, it's me, Carlos. It's, it's me, Carlos. I'm an actor too. I'm an actor.

I'm an actor. I was in a sasson's grade. I was, I was raised by, I was raised by her and an uncle. You know, you know, the Bardems, the Birmingham Bardems, the Birmingham Bardems.

It sounds like, uh, Christopher, yes, one of his character for a best at show, the guy that has the bloodhound, the, yeah, yeah, Pnutch. Yeah. Yeah. Um, who else you got?

Brittany's popping up in here for one scene. Yeah. I was looking real cloudy. Oh, yeah.

What's up with that? You know, an older drink oriented fellow, I suppose. I love it. They're like, all right.

We have Brendan Gleason. He's like, I, I'm not moving from this spot. You can kill me here. I will not take one step.

You come to me. I, I think it's a huge missed opportunity that we didn't see Brendan Gleason kicking some ass here because he is supposed to be one of these assasinos, um, just older and having been captured and kept in this facility for a long time. He's also Cal's dad. He is Cal's dad.

Michael fast benders dad. He's also daddy. How about that? Everyone's being daddy in this thing.

Yeah. Geez. Can we get one non daddy, please? Michael K Williams.

He's no one's daddy. He's no one's daddy, but he's somebody's daddy. Um, and say that. Sorry.

Yeah. Michael K Williams as Musa, he's just like, he's an assassin. Uh, he's a part of this facility. He just becomes friends like him and fast benders character Cal become friends in this sort of facility.

That's like kind of it. Yeah. And the assassins seem to know what's up. Right.

Like they've been in the crazy machine in the Animus. Oh, yeah. And so they're all like, these guys are actually bad guys, even though they said they were good, which you're not supposed to be allowed to do is say good if you're bad. Yeah.

But it happens every day. Do you know if these people are lying to us? I can't believe it. Um, the, uh, yeah.

So he's just sort of like waiting in the wings, uh, like waiting to see if he gets the, gets the big picture here. Mm. Of course. He also tells him to fucking kill himself at one point.

Yeah. Oh, yeah. You suck. Yeah.

It's like, uh, McConaughey and that it's season one of true detective. I mean, he's talking about women who like killed her kids and he's like, if you get the chance, you should probably just kill yourself before. I mean, that character was so cold, blooded man. That's what I hear.

I've seen it. I want to be like that when I grow up. Does he have a funny name? I bet he does.

Like a hard boiled name. I'm sure he does. I can't remember it, but yeah. Um, but it, oh God.

Now you're fucking make. Oh my God. Yeah. It's, uh, oh, Rustin Cole.

Yeah. Rusty for sure, of course. Yeah, of course. It was rusty.

If you're saying, I think it was you cold, if you're bad, if you're really bad, you get that rusty. Call give you that rusty. Call. You know, one time I got a rusty coal.

I had to pay $200 for it. Oh boy. Who else is in it? Charlotte Rambling.

She pops in. Charlotte Rambling is also part of this, uh, cabal of templars or whatever, but she's not like part of this facility. She's like in charge of funding it, I guess. Like Charlotte Rambling, you were telling me was in a movie where she plays a sexy Nazi.

She plays a Nazi sex slave. Okay. Never mind. So that's not sexy.

Yeah. You're your words. You know, I guess I was texting while you were talking. Uh, yes.

And to be clear, she was a sex slave for the Nazis, not a Nazi and a sex slave. Correct. But yeah, she's kind of in this movie a little bit. Uh, you know, not, not too much.

Just to basically do like Hillary Clinton style girl power at the end. Kind of, yeah. Like it seems, you know, with the ending, which we got to, it seems like they're, you know, leaving it open for her to be a villain in future films. Oh, yeah.

They were, they were like plans for the sequel. Yeah. Imagine, oh man, imagine Christopher Columbus's descendant being in this and he's played by like who'd play Christopher Columbus's descendant. Oh, Will Ferrell.

That'd be funny. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. That's good stuff.

Um, no, you need like an Italian guy, right? Tuitch. Yeah. Maybe a tool.

No, you know, you need somebody who's like, not the tooch isn't fit. He is a fit guy, but you need some, an action guy. You need somebody who's going to be thrown hands here, right? I'm going to say Adrian Brody.

Just with the string being power. He's going to win through the power of being a string being. Yeah. Nobody could shoot him because he's such a damn string being.

You know, so not to make light of the exploits of Christopher Columbus, but I guess theoretically his descendant, his living descendant could end up in Jamaica, giving him the chance to reprise his role of reggaeton Brody. Reggaeton Brody. That's the only way I would see that movie. If they made, if Adrian Brody was like, I'm making reggaeton Brody and that's, this is my character.

It's like a, you know, like a Larry the cable guy kind of thing where he's like, you know, or a Madea where it's just like in, is my, my regga character and I would see every single one of those. Absolutely. Absolutely. What if it's like a biopic about that day and he's played by Chet Hanks who also talks like that in public?

I want to see him. We were regga Brody and Chet Hanks meet and they just fucking it's like, it's like my beef patties with Andre stupid, stupid. It doesn't need a eye for that accent, by the way. What's that?

We don't need a eye for that accent. No, it's got it locked down. Yeah, he's really good at that one. What do you got?

You got this guy, Denny Minoshette? Minos, Minos, Minos, Minos, what the hell are you talking about? I don't know dude. How do you say that name?

Yeah, probably Minoshet or something. Minoshet? All right. That guy who, this is French Paul Hollywood.

Yeah, I super powered this. I was like, I know this guy, where am I known from? And he's in the first scene in Inglorious Basterds where Christoph Waltz goes to that farmhouse and he's hiding the. Oh, is he the patriarch?

Yeah. He's the farmer there. Yeah. When Christoph Waltz drinks the milk.

Oh my God, he drinks all the fucking milk. Horrible. Speaking of milk, Dan. Sure.

Have you seen Baby Girl? The Nicole Kidman? No, sexy movie. Have you?

I did. I watched it the other day. I don't think I'm mature enough to watch any movie about sexuality. Because the whole time I was just like, well, this is silly.

I'm giggling the whole time. It is silly though, right? Of course it's silly. By all counts.

Yeah. I think it's supposed to be silly or whatever. I do think Nicole Kidman is good at it. But there's a scene where this young intern guy that she has the affair with, they're at like a bar and she's at a table with people and he's at the bar and he sends over a glass of milk to her and she drinks the whole damn thing.

So they're on the same page as like, same color as calm. Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. Cool. It's cool.

It's cool. It's fun. It's one of the craziest parts of that movie is that she's married to Antonio Van Dares and she's like, no, he's not doing it for me. So who else?

Who else is it? That's it, probably. Yeah. I mean, I did want to point out Essie Davis who plays Kal's mom.

Kal's a dead mom for the most part. Yeah. The director's wife. Oh, okay.

That's wow. I mean, if the role, you know, if like I'm trying to do something where like he could also be married to Brendan Gleason if his thing is actors, he just stay in one place the whole time. Yeah. Trying to do something with that.

Right. Trying to see if I can land that plane. Yeah. Not a good aeroplaning plane.

So no. And then wait, and then this guy Callum Turner. Wait, Callum Lynch? No, no.

No. He plays one of the other like inmates here. He's he's in that movie, Green Room. He's in the band.

No, we shouldn't. Many think we should do a series of just of movies with colors in the title. Green Room, Blue Ruin, that sort of thing. Yeah, blue, whatever.

You know, we could do black swan or I don't want to do black. Blue is the warmest color. I'll do that one. Yeah.

It's something about it. So this movie, right? We've got colors in the title. Yeah.

What's that? What? Red Sparrow with a red one. Red one.

Be a great time to watch red one. Oh, he's very time watching red one. We always have a great time watching red one. I'm sharing for Santa.

Yeah. Another movie starring a Callum. Who's? Callum Drift.

This is I think the rock's character in that's his name in red one. Yeah. Makes no sense. When did Callum become a name?

I don't know. I don't know. We should do a series on movies where the main character is Callum. Sure.

We do that. Two movies. Two movies. Red one and this one again.

So first scene, we got like the assassins. You know, we get the fast-bander assassin taking his oath and he's like, I will be a sassino, right? And then cut to present day and well, almost present day and there's a boy riding a bike. It gets home.

His mom dead. And his dad wearing a hood and has a knife there and he's like, they're coming for us. They found us. You have to run.

Still necklace in her hand. No, she does. Yeah. That'll be important.

No. No, man. No, I won't. None of this is important.

It will come up again, but not important. Certainly not important. This young boy who sees his dead mom and his dad tells him to run. He runs and he runs all the way and we get the sort of like a pre before he's, you know, an assassin, you know, he's doing some kid parkour before he gets to be born.

Oh, yeah. He's trying to ride his BMX bike. I'm like one from like a building on to like a shipping container. Yeah.

It's quite make it. Yeah. It's all fine. Whatever.

Sure. He's got the heart of an assassino. And then we cut to actual present day and fast-bender. This boy has grown up to be a criminal.

What? Yeah, he's on death row. Death row for killing a pimp. That's crazy.

It's so crazy. The judge is wearing like a big hat with a feather in it. Yeah, the craziest fucking thing is that he is on death row for killing a pimp. Right.

Like they need it to be moral in some way. Right. He has to be right on death row for murder, but he can't have murdered somebody. In quotations like good.

Right. Like so they do this in person. They're like, well, what if Travis Bickle was a time traveling hero? Yeah, even taxi driver.

That guy, I mean, Travis Bickle, he like kills a bunch of people and depending on your interpretation, gets away with it, Scott Free. But yeah, fucking crazy. Crazy that he's a murderer on death row and that he is on death row for killing a pimp. I don't know.

What is that? What are you talking about? It's crazy. That's like, not only is like, so like this insane fantasy world or whatever that we're living in here, like, okay, death row is still very much.

And then they do like a public execution where they're like, people, like the glass room. I'm going to make the same joke and say it's a bunch of people in pimp costumes. Yeah. I mean, like that would have been funny if it was just like purple suits.

Yeah, purple suits, all the sex workers, all the hoes, you know, getting there. Get him. Yeah. Without like any context, just seeing that audience and being like, wait, what's happening?

What's going on? Callum Lynch, you are sentenced to death for the crime of Pimpicide. So yeah, he gets the lethal injection and then he wakes up. What?

The hot leaf injection. I'm calling it. Yeah. But yeah, he does wake up, not dead.

He's not in heaven at all. Not in heaven at all. He's at this laboratory in... Are we in Spain?

Not in Spain. Oh, we are in Spain. Oh, we are? Oh, yes.

All right. We're in Spain. Yeah, they're in Spain. Yeah.
