Most antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene) can become pro-oxidant under certain conditions i.e donating an electron, then becoming a radical themselves. Astaxanthin is the only known carotenoid that quenches singlet oxygen and scavenges radicals without ever generating a pro-oxidant state. It literally cannot do harm through its antioxidant mechanism.
