Seth Wallace Chandlee was born into a family of commercial contactors. His paternal grandfather, James Rush Chandlee, received the contract from President Eisenhower to pave Interstate 85 through his company, Ballenger. His uncle founded the Turner Construction Company in New York that built Madison Square Gardens, assisted with the construction of the subway system along with many other large projects.
