Atlantic City Has a Secret History Nobody Talks About

from Talk About It With Franjez · host Franjez

Episode 168 of Talk About It with Franjez was filmed inside ByrdCage in Atlantic City, New Jersey, with Atlantic City born content creator and media personality Whitney Ullman aka @GoToWhitney, alongside ByrdCage owners Giulietta Consalvo and Richard Helfant. We went far beyond food and nightlife. We talked about the Atlantic City most people never hear about: the city’s history before the casinos, the legendary Boardwalk, the first casino, Resorts International, Steel Pier, salt water taffy, Frank Sinatra, Boardwalk Hall and the people and businesses that helped shape Atlantic City into what it is today. We also explored a fascinating part of Atlantic City’s LGBTQ history. Long before casino gambling transformed the city, Atlantic City had a thriving LGBTQ nightlife and community. Over time, many of those independent spaces disappeared. ByrdCage represents a new chapter, opening as Atlantic City’s first full-service LGBTQ+ bar and restaurant in roughly two decades. Giulietta Consalvo, Richard Helfant and Jason Tell built ByrdCage around hospitality, entertainment, food and community, while Whitney Ullman brings more than 20 years of media experience and a deep connection to Atlantic City. This conversation is about food, nightlife, LGBTQ history, Atlantic City history, entrepreneurship, community and the people keeping the city’s personality alive. This is Atlantic City beyond the casinos.
