Send us Fan MailAyn Rand published Atlas Shrugged in 1957 as a long philosophical novel set in a deteriorating near-future United States, where expanding government controls, “need” as a moral claim, and the punishment of ability are collapsing industry, transport, and science. The story follows railroad executive Dagny Taggart, steelmaker Hank Rearden, and the hidden organizer John Galt as the most competent men and women withdraw their minds from a society that treats their work as loot; the recurring question “Who is John Galt?” becomes both a slogan of despair and the name of the strike of the producers. Rand used the plot to dramatize the ideas she later called Objectivism: reason as man’s basic means of survival, the morality of rational self-interest, and laissez-faire capitalism as the only social system consistent with individual rights.
