Through these interaction he forms scores of attachments and aversions. His single- minded pursuit of sensory desires and sensual pleasures, results in perishable worldly objects and transient pleasures. No effort is made to gain jnana. A human being’s highest purpose is to realise God. Instead he spends his life relentlessly seeking material and sensory pleasures. Eventually his body weakens,senses dwindle and he dies of old age or diseases or natural disaster. It is difficult to know when the jiva leaves the body, when and where it will be born or whether it will be born in this realm or be stuck in transit realm, or the from it will take. Shri Shankaracharya was born to virtuous and spiritual parents, by the grace of Lord Shiva in Kaladi ( Cochin) in 788CE. Under his father’s tutelage young Shankara learned all the vedas and puranas.Endowed with astute intellect he would sing verses from Vedas. On the day his father left his body, he observed all the after-death rituals and saw his mother widowed. Seeing death in close quarters intense vairagya rose in his heart. So much so that a 8 year old Shankara begged his mother to give him permission to become a sannyasi. His mother refused. One day when he went to the river for bath, his legs were grabbed by a crocodile.While Mother screamed for help, Shankara screamed - but for the permission to become sanyasi. Seeing him in the fatal grip of the crocodile she grants him the permission. Immediately the crocodile lets go of Shankara’s legs. With his mother’s approval young child begins his journey.In short span of time, he mastered most of the scriptures like Upanishads, Brahmasutras and Bhagavat Gita. Nirvanashatakam and Bhajagovindam are some of his compositions. Atmabodha means to realise the Self or understanding of the Atman.The text is a rhythmic piece of literary work narrated in 68 verses.In a way it can be seen as an introductory text to the philosophy of Vedanta. In the process of listening this text one learns to: 1. Scientifically investigate 2. Observe the external world with astute perceptivity, 3. to reach logical conclusions, 4. Methodically think and make decisions, 5. And how to maintain Vairagya. Human beings are not here only to eat, drink, sleep and work. There is more to the existence than we know. What is Atman? Why am I here? What is my real nature? - should have been most pressing issue. Our basic problem is that we falsely identify with this body and mind. We don’t think, question, contemplate and seek. ‘Athmabodha’ is a comprehensive explanation of that we are ignorant about. It is important that we learn Vedanta texts from an enlightened master. Many books are available, reading on our own will only give information not knowledge. The interpretation of the text will be according to one’s own intellectual ability and conditioning. Certain qualities and eligibility are imperative in a student of Vedanta. In the Bhagvat Gita, Sri Krishna describes these qualities in detail: i) cleanliness in body and mind ii)non-violence in action, speech and thinking iii) truthfulness -refraining from gossip and backbiting, relinquishing anger and greed & desire for comfort, kindness, being tolerant, being forgiving, contented etc.... One should always observe his mind and cut out all the traits harmful to his spiritual growth. Intense yearning for liberation, pure mind and stilled intellect would take one to the doorstep of liberation.Utmost faith in one’s Guru/ Master and the above mentioned qualities would release one from the bondages of samsara. The master alone can take you away from the illusory self to the real Self.
