Atmabodha Verse 37 & 38

from Silent Wisdom Hosted by Muni

Verse 37 In this verse Shankaracharya says, continuous practice and relentless contemplation on truism ‘I am Brahman’ - would destroy the ignorance and delusion. Appropriate medication is the cure for any disease likewise, medicine of Jnana is the only cure for the disease of ignorance. The intellect has to be refined. It has to be purified to such an extent that the experience of ‘I am the supreme Self’ becomes an irrefutable reality. It is a journey from the plurality of chidabhas to the singularity of the ever-conscious, ever-blissful, eternal, all-pervading existence - Brahman. Kashmiri Shaivism says - ‘It is a journey from jiva to Shiv.’ ENLIGHTENMENT : AS LIGHT MERGES WITH LIGHT The way to the goal and the tools to be availed on this path Verse 38 It is the nature of the world to challenge you. Relatives fight and make up only to fight again.This merry go round of joy and sorrow; pleasure and pain continues endlessly. Only listening to the highest knowledge / Vedanta is not going to help. There are times when one feels that he/ she has understood the highest knowledge and most of the times feels that he/she doesn’t know anything. When things are upbeat the individual thinks that he/she is the detached witness, the real Self and when things go awry the individual loses his/her equanimity. Alluding the importance of samadhi, Shankaracharya shows the way out of this vicious cycle. To have any empirical understanding, tool that master is talking about is — to sit in a solitary place with total dispassion; total control of the senses and; single-pointedly focusing the intellect, upon the singular boundless real Self with unswerving attention; focus only on the Self, for this Self is the eternal pure existence. Self is realised when one gains atma-gyan; atma gyan happens when the above said tools are utilised. An individual with an intense longing to know the truth, would find a solitary place and would sit total dispassion, total control of the senses and single-pointedly meditate on the real Self. Once self-realisation is achieved, one can go about living life as he/ she has been doing so long. Vedanta does not advocate escapism from the material world. But the mind needs to be freed from delusions and misconceptions which can be achieved by listening to the words of wisdom; but even after listening,if the mind is still deluded, then the individual needs to meditate to realise the Truth. Even if the mind-intellect is not refined or freed from the impurities the Self remains eternally pure , ever-blissful, unblemished, as the absolute Truth. No matter what one does or doesn’t do the Self is pure bliss. One might ask if the Self is all-knowing, if the Self knows the Self, why bother to know the Self through mind-intellect? The feeling of ‘I am’ arises in the intellect only because of its close association with the real Self. Just as instruments of cognitive senses are required to perceive the material world, the instrument of mind-intellect is essential for the perception of ‘I am’. The association of mind- intellect with the real Self masks the reality; mind emerges from the darkness of the ignorance; Self on the other hand is radiant Truth; when darkness and light come in proximity it creates fogginess; the close association of the foggy mind with the Self ends up clouding the real Self. Understanding Vednanta is a continuous process. Innumerable desires, attachments- aversion, hatred, anger, jealousy etc shrouds the real Self in the darkness. The darkest of them all is the assumption that - I am this body . Seeds of karma lie in Chitta and periodically it keeps giving the fruit of virtuous and vile karma. Subconscious mind is like a camera that records everything - good and bad deeds; good thoughts and wicked thoughts ; attachments and aversions nothing is left out. Physical bodies change but the mind remains the same. All the previous thoughts and deeds are present in the deeper layers of the mind (gets accumulated in the subconscious mind). Under favourable conditions they sprout/ give results. Sorrow and loss are fruits of bad karmas. Good friends, good health, good relationship and the grace of an enlightened master ect., are the fruits of the noble karma; if the karmas are not virtuous one might not be able find a Guru; even if one manages to get a guru he might be a charlatan. Self is without a beginning, so is its reflection. Jiva/chidabhas is as beginning-less as Atman. To some extent it is easier to understand that I am not the body ( it is gross); and relate to the fact that I am not my senses; but when it comes to the mind it’s difficult to understand what it means to not be the mind. Thousands of thoughts run in the mind every moment. Instead of saying ‘My mind is thinking this or that ’ or ‘my intellect could not understand it’ one tends to say ‘I am thinking this or that’ or ‘I did not understand it’ which means that the individual is equating the mind intellect with the Self. Essentially every individual lives as the mind; lives as the intellect and hence it is difficult to comprehend what it means not to be the mind-intellect. Bottom line is to contemplate and understanding that ‘I’ am with the body, senses, mind and intellect and yet ‘I’ am distinct from them. Addressing the body in third person for a period of 3 to 6 months would help. The body wants - This body is hungry and it needs food, body is sitting in the garden, ‘my mother’ becomes ‘ this body’s mother’ senses desire - eg. ear and mind want to hear this ; eyes and mind want to see that The mind feels - eg. This mind has a feeling of jealousy for you or anger towards you It’s neither good to form attachments nor harbour feelings of hatred towards anyone. It damages one’s own mind. Holding on to resentments and hatred would make the mind foggier and more difficult for it to grasp the knowledge of Vedanta.
