Atmabodha Verse 46

from Silent Wisdom · host Muni

Verse 46 By Bindu Self- knowledge is attained at the very moment of self-realisation. The moment one realises the ESSENCE of one’s own Self- that very instant one gets self-realised. Self was never lost and so it is never found. IT WAS, IT ALWAYS IS. There can be a distance from everything/ everyone (wealth, possessions, relatives) but, the Self is never far. In the state of deep sleep, even the mind can be lost, but one can never say ‘I have lost myself.’ Even after hearing the reality of the Self, one might not get self-realised because, the identification with the body-mind-intellect is so strong. The mind remains deluded, inspite of listening to the words of wisdom - as the worldly desires over power and the intellect might not be sharp enough to fathom the heard words. The power of ignorance is all-encompassing. The intellect has to be intact and still to retain and to comprehend this knowledge. Dispassion and concentration both are needed. Regular practice of yoga and pranayama would quieten the mind. In ancient times, the onus would be on the disciple to make himself eligible and then seek knowledge. The master would part the Vedantic knowledge only to a disciple, who had experienced nirvikalpa samadhi. Receptivity and dispassion (vairagya) are the prerequisites for receiving this knowledge. Highly integrated, focused mind and a sharp intellect are crucial on the path of jnana. The listener has to be completely READY to absorb the knowledge imparted; the moment one comprehends the essence of the Self, self- realisation happens instantaneously. The consequence of self-realisation is that—> all the misconceptions disappear; The false notion of ‘me and mine’ evaporates in the fire of knowledge; Just as ‘I’ am the real Self, so are the others. Shankaracharya compares this world to a dense forest, shrouded by the darkness of ignorance - in its poor visibility, one cannot see his/her own Self. Additionally, the individuals consider the body and body’s relations as ‘I’ and ‘mine’. Continue performing all sorts of karma and bear its consequences. Deluded in attachments and aversions they continue to suffer. The reason sannyasa/ renunciation is taken :- a sannyasi neither wants to procreate another mortal body, nor does he/she wants anyone to bear fruits of his/her karma( the chain of karma is passed on through the generations). A sannyasi, renounces his/ her ties with the family and world; thereby ending the business of give and take -- karma (which is associated with jiva, ie identification with body-mind) The renunciate performs one’s own shraddha ( after death ritual) while taking sannyasa; makes a resolve that he/she has no relations and has no connection with his /her ancestors from that day onwards. Guru lights up the path of moksha, it is upon the disciple to walk on it. By repeatedly contemplating on ‘I am not this body nor is this body mine’ and by carrying out the needful spiritual practices one might reach the destination of self-realisation.
