After he got car-jacked near his home in South London, future writer and director Joe Cornish started to wonder what would have happened if a meteor fell from the sky and came crashing down to the ground at the same time he was being robbed. How would that change the dynamic of that situation? Cornish believed that he would probably turn to his tormentors to ask them to have his back in such an unpredictable and potentially dangerous moment. That spawned an idea for Cornish, who had grown up admiring directors who had wildly creative ambitions but not the budgets to match, yet they somehow made it work. Like Steven Spielberg with “Duel” or James Cameron with “The Terminator.” He decided to create a 10 page treatment set in the world of science fiction and fantasy but rather than just write the script, he actually visited several youth clubs all around London to interview kids to find out how they would react to these different and sometimes bizarre situations.
