Attention is Finite. Before Calling it ADHD How Much Energy Are You Expending Trying to be Engaged?

from Support, Protect, Empower - The Project Purpose Podcast · host Rachelle Innocent

Attention is Finite. Before Calling it ADHD How Much Energy Are You Expending Trying to be Engaged? Paying attention takes energy. Paying attention when the content isn't engaging, and the environment also requires you to self-regulate by sitting still and staying quiet is all the more challenging. Why? Because focus is a finite resource. We can keep the muscle flexed for long before it needs to take a break. The same with attention. Attention without engagement burns through a lot of the resources that we have at our disposal to stay focused and to learn. Many individuals are quick to criticize when there are some who struggle to pay attention, failing to recognize that they've tapped out on focus and self-regulation, because those burn out quickly when not super-fuelled by being engaged. Video games are engaging - and people can't get enough of it. Rather than self-identify as having ADHD why not find out what makes content or learning engaging for you, as an initial first step.
