It's Thursday when we talk about podcasting. Isn't that special? Wow All right, why in hell did I laugh and what kind of laugh was that? Should I edit that out?
No, I don't know. I just don't but that was a weird ass laugh, man. Oh gosh It's giving me it's giving me palpitations. I didn't like it.
Okay. Welcome to the show. This is a daily grateful I am Michael crows and today we are on Thursdays we talk about podcasting and we talked about microphones the last time I think we were together and I and I talked about USB microphones and I talked about XLR microphones and the question was what's the difference in which is best? Okay Let's start with USB microphone a USB microphone that you can stick a USB plug into and plug it directly into your computer and you can talk to it and an XLR microphone is a microphone that you have to plug an XLR cord into okay, and then you have to take that cord and Plug it into something called an audio interface and audio interface is a hardware advice It connects microphones and instruments and other you know stuff into a computer It goes in there it takes an analog signal your voice and it transforms it into the tiny numbers and Xs and O's and all that stuff And then shoots it into your computer where your computer then takes it and takes all those and Xs and O's and flows All back together and it comes out in a very high quality voice that then is recorded on to your hard drive Yeah, that makes sense.
Did it was that a good thing now? Your the question was which is better a USB microphone or an XLR microphone for years four years I've always said an XLR microphone is better Every sound engineer that I know and I know a lot of them have always said an XLR combination or connection is better because you are going Into a device like the device. I am looking at right now is a roadcaster Pro It is a fabulous audio interface interface. It it does all kinds of wonderful things to my voice It does compression it does all this stuff and it's wonderful plus I can push little buttons over here and it can It's like a label.
Yeah stuff like I have all these buttons So that you know when you heard the music that was all done with my audio interface which connects me to you know Everything I need and eventually when I'm done it records right on to my interface But eventually when it's done it will go right to my computer It is pretty cool a USB microphone on the other hand goes straight It skips all that stuff skips every bit of that and goes directly into your computer Which is best I have always said this I've always said an XLR But today and today only no, but today I have to say my thoughts process is changing and it's changing quite a bit And it seemed to have I've I seem to have said an awful lot of stuff right now And I've only been talking for three minutes and 48 seconds and I've covered so much But anyway, sometimes I can just do that But it is now my view on is a USB my most USB microphones are just not that good Now I've got a microphone down here in my case and it is a Samsung Microphone and you can you hook it up with a USB or you can hook it up with an XLR now I've tested this thing in the past I've hooked it up to an XLR and I've talked and I've made a little recording and then I Unplugged all of that and I used a USB and went right into the computer and I could tell a difference a big difference You know not a terribly big difference, but to me audio file a big difference. I didn't like it No, I still think it's cool microphone. I think it's just a fabulous microphone. It's like 70 bucks But it is wonderful and as a matter of fact If you want to start a podcast and you want to go directly into your computer and you don't have a lot of dollars I buy that microphone.
It's a Samsung Q2U is what it is. Go look it up on Amazon really good But now there are microphones like the one I'm speaking into right now by a company called Road who are making a USB microphone Just much much better now. I've got in this room that I can see one two three Four road microphones sitting around one that I'm using the other one I want one the other one that there's another one that's plugged in to this audio interface at all You know in case anybody comes over and I want to sit there but down and talk to them and record it but What I'm speaking to you now is called the road USB Pod mic now the Pod mic was a $99 microphone This is a $200 microphone because you can plug it in using an XLR which I have right now It's plugged directly into my Roadcaster bro with an XLR this thing sounds fabulous now. I was using before I was using this I was using a road I think it was called I forget, but it was there's their most expensive Dynamic microphone and I had those as a matter of fact It's well.
I took it up to the technology center and I threw it in there and left it I've all it's a volunteer organization. We have a podcast studio So I donated it to them because this thing right here that I'm tapping on is a USB mic USB Pod mic, but I'm using the XLR, but guess what I did I Tried this thing out on my laptop I pulled the laptop in here and I use the USB I unplug the XLR and I put it in the USB and the first thing it wanted to do Was it wanted to download it wanted to go on the internet and download some road software and I said, oh Okay, and I'm very familiar with the road software because I use it It's in my computer and I use it with my Roadcaster Pro It's there and I use it for that reason now They want you to download a version of that just for this microphone and it takes this microphone and does just about everything That my rather expensive Roadcaster Pro audio interface does it doesn't make these cute little noises? No, but it does everything else. It does the audio compression.
It does just oh my gosh It just makes it sound so good So you want to start a podcast you got 200 bucks if you don't save 200 bucks and buy the road Pod mic USB because I will tell you Plug directly into my laptop. I was very impressed Is it as good as it's plugged into an XLR not quite but you know nobody But me's gonna know the damn difference I swear to God I could I could walk out into my neighborhood and I'd say come on neighbors come over my house I'm gonna listen to some and I'd play both the recordings and I'd say tell me which ones better and they tell me they all Sound exactly the same. So I think it's a damn good microphone ensure the company sure Oh my gosh sure microphones are just fabulous They've got one now that is a USB and it's very similar to this and I have not heard it personally But I have talked to a friend of mine in Canada who bought one and he tells me it sounds fabulous He said you know in this guy He had the sheer SM7B which is a XLR only microphone and it's one of the best It's the very microphone that Michael Jackson recorded thriller on okay That's how good that microphone is and they now have a version of it that is a USB and he's telling me it sounds fabulous So which is better I think you're fine if you buy a really good USB microphone If you don't want to buy all this other stuff that I have that I just happen to love then You're just fine if you buy a good microphone buy the shore or buy this one road by the way road is now known as the apple of Audio equipment they're like the best and before them sure was the best before sure was the best Electro voice you know the electro voice RE 20 I've got one in the other room It is a about a $450 microphone and it is what every stinking radio station that has a budget of more than a thousand dollars a month Has I always use that microphone in 35 years of radio. That's the only microphone.
I ever used and You know absolutely fabulous But this microphone are you this USB microphone?
