August 19: SERVANT OF GOD NICHOLAS BLACK ELK: Lakota Catholic Hero

Servant of God Nicholas Black Elk went from Lakota warrior to Catholic catechist who brought over 400 people to baptism. Nicholas Black Elk lived through the Battle of Little Bighorn and the tragedy of Wounded Knee before being baptized Catholic in 1904. From then on, he rode across the Lakota lands of South Dakota as a catechist, teaching his own people about Baptism, the Eucharist, and Our Lady in words only he could speak. His cause for sainthood is now open with the Catholic Church. "He spent the first half of his life searching for truth.
