A man who'd just lost nearly everything spent a year alone in a backyard shed solving a problem nobody else had managed to crack.On August 25, 1958, in Ikeda, Osaka, Japan, Momofuku Ando launched Chikin Ramen, the world's first instant noodle product, after a year of solitary experimentation following the collapse of a credit union that had wiped out his fortune. Inspired by watching his wife fry tempura, Ando developed a flash-frying technique that let noodles be stored indefinitely and prepared in minutes with nothing but hot water.
