Austin officials seek guidance on immigration enforcement

Several members of the Austin City Council are awaiting a response from the city manager regarding how to address federal immigration policy and enforcement. The city council members sent Austin City Manager TC Broadnax a memorandum titled, “Protecting the People of Austin from Unconstitutional and Violent Federal Operations.” The memo has five directives, which include exploring ways to prohibit law enforcement from wearing face coverings in the city, expanding education programs to help people understand their rights, ensuring the city is reporting “violence, property damage, and allegations of criminal conduct” by federal officers, and finding ways to report instances where agents may have entered a property without a warrant. KXAN reporter Grace Reader spoke with one of the council members and got a comment from the city manager’s office.
