Australië en de band met het Britse Koningshuis

Sinds 1867 heeft de Britse koninklijke familie Australië meer dan vijftig keer bezocht. Elizabeth II was de eerste regerende monarch die voet op Australische bodem zette. Ze was toen 27 jaar oud (3 februari 1954). Miljoenen Australiërs juichten de koninging destijds toe. Het meest recent bezoek was van Koning Charles III en Koningin Camilla (oktober 2024) en ook toen stonden er hordes mensen langs de weg. Maar er is ook een grote groep die het koningshuis liever kwijt dan rijk is en als republiek verder wil. Historica Ingeborg van Teeseling bespreekt de band van het Britse koningshuis met Australië.
