AUTHENTIC CONNECTION: TONY BAKER ON LEADERSHIP, TRUST & KNOWING WHO YOU ARE

from Peace Love and Bring a Bat · host David Chametzky

AUTHENTIC CONNECTION: TONY BAKER ON LEADERSHIP, TRUST & KNOWING WHO YOU ARE What happens when leadership stops being about authority and starts becoming about authentic connection? On this episode of Peace, Love, and Bring a Bat, Uncle Dave welcomes Tony Baker, a 30-plus-year veteran of the creative industries, former commercial photographer, author, coach, and consultant. Tony began his career at 17, sweeping floors and cleaning studios before building a career that took him into entertainment, fashion, advertising, large-scale creative operations, and corporate leadership. Along the way, he learned that success is not only about talent. It is about being valuable. Being trusted. Knowing who you are. And communicating that clearly enough that other people want to follow you. In this episode, you will discover: • How Tony went from minimum wage studio work to high-level creative leadership • Why being invited back became an early measure of success • How great leaders make people understand their value • The difference between building a team and inheriting one • Why listening is one of the most powerful leadership skills • How leaders create trust during high-stakes situations • Why mistakes can become your greatest teachers • How ego can grow when success arrives quickly • Why recognition can be more powerful than new information • How authentic connection became the thread running through Tony’s career • What portrait photography taught him about understanding people • Why leaders must communicate who they are, what they are doing, and why • How knowing your foundation helps you stay steady when everything changes HOW DO YOU BECOME VALUABLE? Tony says one of the earliest lessons of his career was simple: Do a good enough job today to be invited back tomorrow. At first, his value was his willingness to work harder than everyone else. Over time, that developed into creative skill, leadership, communication, trust, and the ability to deliver when the stakes were high. BUILDING AUTHENTIC CONNECTION As a commercial portrait photographer, Tony often had very little time to connect with someone who did not want to be in front of the camera. His job was to help that person relax enough to reveal something real. That same skill became central to his leadership and coaching. Be curious. Listen. Find common ground. Help people recognize the strongest version of themselves. HERE’S WHO WE ARE Tony references a powerful scene from Gladiator where the leader essentially declares: Here’s who I am. Here’s what I’m about. Here’s what I’m going to do. That is leadership. When leaders clearly communicate: Who we are. What we are doing. Why we are doing it. People know what they are being asked to follow. Trust grows when the message comes from an authentic place. FIND YOUR FOUNDATION Tony believes people become unstable when they lose connection with who they are at their core. Careers change. Organizations change. Relationships change. The world around us changes. Your foundation keeps you from being blown around by every new circumstance. When you reconnect with yourself, choices may not become easy—but they often become clearer. SEED FOR THE MAGIC GARDEN Tony’s advice: Listen to yourself. Be curious about who you really are. Know what matters to you. Understand the thread that has run through your life. Return to the practices that help you become centered and clear. The stronger your connection with yourself, the stronger your leadership can become.
