Authenticity, the New Currency

from Common Good · host Our House

I was perusing Instagram today (I’m rarely there; TikTok & Substack are my hangouts), and I noticed how grotesque I found most of the celebrities in my scroll and search page. Every celebrity looked like a cartoonish version of themselves—like they were overworked on the manufacturing line.I’ve noticed a similar grotesque quality in advertising, including social media promotions—the ads are absurdist now, grasping for attention in the loudest ways possible. I feel things will be even more absurd moving forward. The gray areas will fade away, and it will be increasingly obvious what is true or false. It’ll also be obvious inside ourselves, our relationships, the things we buy, the places we spend time—real spaces, real people, real food, etc, will be what we want. I’m there now. Any bullshit inside or outside of me cannot survive these days; my system can’t tolerate it. I felt physically sick a few times at the fundraiser I mentioned. The good news is the water is warm here in the real world. So keep coming. Keep choosing authenticity. Tell yourself the truth. Then, tell them the truth. It gets easier every time. And life gets better each time. This is the only way we’re headed, team. More real. More joy.
