Author James Burnell talks to Anne Marie

from The Paragraph Challenge Podcast .Specialist on all things Dyslexic

Before James Burnell started his author's journey, only three people knew he had dyslexia. He was always embarrassed about it and didn’t like to admit he needed help. Now, he has learnt that no matter how much he hides from dyslexia, it is part of him.James explains, “My biggest fascination with words really is how a single word, or a single letter, can completely change the meaning of a sentence or change the context. While it wasn’t my intention, I realise now I wrote about my experience with dyslexia. I sometimes find myself living in Zeeber’s no rules world when I am reading, mixing words up and taking a different meaning from a book, email or text message. Frequently, I misunderstand an innocent message as something offensive or aggressive and react to it, only to come back and read it again to realise it didn’t mean what I initially thought it did. I feel like I am Zeeber and the Zuckle represents readings. As a child I tried to avoid reading when I could. Rather than getting help, I locked my Zuckle away. This caused more confusion later in life when I did have to read. Now as an adult, I am embracing reading. I have sought out my Zeeper to find the answers. I have unlocked my Zuckle to read more.”James is first and foremost a father and husband. With a degree in Nautical Science and eight years in the Merchant Navy, James has relocated to Scotland, where he currently works as a Performance Analyst. James loves to be creative and is an avid lover of all things fantasy, sci-fi, and anime. He and his son enjoy creating stories together.Read less Hosted on Acast.
