Autistic People-Pleasing

from The Autistic Mile · host Jim Gaffney

Why do so many autistic people spend so much energy trying to fit in? Many autistic individuals learn to hide or suppress their natural behaviors, mimic social norms, or put the needs of others before their own—not because they’re being dishonest, but because they genuinely want to be accepted, avoid conflict, and meet others halfway. Masking can sometimes help people navigate social situations, but it can come at a cost. Constantly filtering one’s words, expressions, and behaviors can become mentally and emotionally exhausting, making it difficult to feel understood or comfortable being oneself. For this reason, it’s very important for those on the spectrum to exercise self-care and self-love where necessary, and allow for situations where they can let their guard down without fear. #TheAutisticMile #Autism #ActuallyAutistic #AutisticAdults #Neurodiversity #AutisticMasking #PeoplePleasing #MentalHealth #AutismAcceptance #Inclusion #Empathy #UnderstandingAutism #Podcast #YouTubeShorts
