It sits in the grocery bin with a dark, pebbled skin, quiet and heavy in the hand, looking more like a stone than a fruit. But cut it open and there is a soft green world inside—creamy flesh circling one enormous seed, as though the tree has wrapped its future in a layer of rich provision.
