We somehow got an NBC sitcom and moved from Petaluma to Hollywood. When the sitcom got cancelled, Caryl and I hosted an ABC talk show “Caryl and Marilyn: Real Friends.” That was 1996, and it’s when we met Nancy. She was the executive producer – and fashionista extraordinaire. We all had a great time during that wonderful year: OH, for goodness sakes, I got to hold Rose Park’s hand on that show! Thank YOU, Nancy! We formed a strong friendship. And when Barbara Walters got pissy at ABC because Diane Sawyer was getting more time on “2020” and she insisted on having our timeslot for “The View”, we moved on. Caryl, Nancy, and I created an “Art Colony.” I was in my fifties and Nancy was in her forties. Caryl was still in her thirties. Living in LA, Nancy and I saw our fellow sisters struggling about aging. We wanted those who were aghast at their flapping arms to know there are many other ways to get through midlife. We encouraged women to age gracefully. We vowed to support and encourage our fellow Boomers so they knew they are not alone. That’s when we wrote the book. We did speaking engagements and a stage show about growing old. Time passed and I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to be near my daughter, and Nancy concentrated on finding the best ways to rear her autistic baby boy. We got busy with our new lives. I became a grandma and she worked for autism while nursing her cancer-ridden husband. I created a one-woman comedy show, again about aging, called, “Will I Ever Wear a Bikini Again?” While I was on stage in LA, my wonderful husband died of a heart attack. I can’t tell you the shock and grief I’ve gone through. BUT I believe my version of loss was not nearly as straining as how Nancy’s husband finally left this world in her arms. Their autistic boy was approaching his teens and life began to be much more challenging. He had tantrums. The kind that left her trembling and shaking in fear; the kind of tantrum where he would kick her and bite her so hard, she would have to put makeup on her arms to hide the marks and the bruises. Nancy used pills and alcohol to help her get by. Needless to say, that didn’t work. Soon, Nancy went to rehab. She’s honest and active in her recovery. This August, I will turn 75! What?
