Awakenings Podcast S392 - Bad Boombox

from Awakenings · host Awakenings

"Summer, for me, is a very special time musically and creatively. That's why I’m super stoked to play Awakenings for the first time. I wanted to get in the mood and mindset of a full midsummer night out, so I’m sharing this special mix with you that I feel condenses an impression of a summer evening of dancing into an hour and a half. In this mix there are many influences I grew up with as well as modern sounds that inspire me. House rhythms from Chicago, also French house with disco filters, hypnotic techno sounds from Detroit and Berlin, trance elements, and of course the hard to resist hardgroove techno percussion, all within. I take a stance against hard and aggressive sounds but still try to give you lots of energy. I enjoyed exploring these grooves in this mix and I hope (know) you will too." -Bad Boombox WWW.AWAKENINGS.COM ► FOLLOW US Instagram: instagram.com/awakenings Youtube: www.youtube.com/awakeningsevent/ Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@awakenings Facebook: facebook.com/awakenings Soundcloud: @awakenings Upcoming Awakenings Events: awak.enin.gs/3UhfRwZ Bad Boombox is the Berlin-based project of Bulgarian-born artist Djeki, whose high-energy sets fuse techno, house, trance, and hard dance into a sound that’s as playful as it is powerful. Born in Sofia, Bulgaria and raised in the USA, Bad Boombox has been DJing and producing since 2012, constantly evolving across genres while building a style that feels both nostalgic and forward-thinking. Known for pushing groove and personality over trend-chasing, Bad Boombox operates in a lane of his own; blending hard house, eurodance, hardgroove, tribal percussion, Latin-American rhythms, Balkan influences, g-house vocals, and early-2000s rave energy into explosive 130–150 BPM sets. His sound pulls heavily from what he calls “Hard Beach”, a personal genre, alongside HOT HOUSE, the signature sound of Hot Meal Records. Tracks like “Freak Up,” “Medulla,” “Make It Wet,” and the viral “Borat Edit” helped establish Bad Boombox as a standout voice in the new wave of club music. His initial rise came during lockdown through a series of techno memes that unexpectedly became a gateway into his music, building a loyal online following before translating into packed dancefloors worldwide. In 2022, he co-founded the label imprint and agency Hot Meal Records, a platform dedicated to bringing fun, color, groove, and irreverence back into club culture. Living in Berlin continues to shape his artistic identity, not by following the city’s dominant hard techno and bounce scenes, but by actively pushing against them. Inspired by artists like Daft Punk, MRD, MCR-T, Armand Van Helden, and LCD Soundsystem, Bad Boombox creates dance music that refuses to take itself too seriously while still hitting with maximum intensity. The mission is simple: make people move, laugh, sweat, and feel something again.
