MAMMA MIA! está basado en las canciones del popular grupo sueco ABBA, que permaneció activo desde 1972 hasta 1982, conviertiéndose en una de las bandas más populares a nivel internacional de todos los tiempos. Judy Craymer tuvo la idea de realizar un musical a partir de las canciones de ABBA cuando conoció a Björn Ulvaeus y Benny Andersson, mientras estaban trabajando junto a Tim Rice en CHESS. Fue la canción "The Winner Takes It All" la que le sugirió la idea del gran potencial teatral que tenían las canciones del grupo. Los miembros de ABBA no estaban demasiado entusiasmados con la idea, pero finalmente Craymer les convenció cuando les mostró el libreto que había encargado a Catherine Johnson. La colaboración de estas dos mujeres, junto a Phyllida Lloyd, directora del musical, se convirtió rápidamente en un gran éxito. La versión cinematográfica de MAMMA MIA!, protagonizada por  Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski y Julie Walters se empezó a rodar en junio de 2007 y se estrenó en los cines en verano de 2008.
