Ayurvedic Postpartum Care Rest, Food, and Recovery | Elizabeth Swamy

from Rooted & Wild · host Henry Hawk

What if postpartum recovery wasn't something to rush through—but a sacred period of rest, nourishment, and rebuilding? In this episode, I sit down with Elizabeth Swamy, Ayurvedic Doctor, Ayurvedic Doula, yoga teacher, and founder of Vedic Wild Ayurveda, to explore the ancient wisdom of Ayurvedic postpartum care and what it can teach us about supporting mothers after birth. In a culture that often celebrates "bouncing back," Ayurveda offers a very different perspective: slow down, rest deeply, eat nourishing foods, stay warm, and allow the body and nervous system the time they need to recover.Elizabeth shares how her own difficult postpartum experience after the birth of her daughter transformed her understanding of maternal care. Receiving support from a fellow Ayurvedic practitioner became a pivotal part of her recovery—and ultimately inspired her to provide that same level of nurturing care to other mothers. We explore the Ayurvedic understanding of the postpartum period, why food is so central to recovery, the importance of warmth and grounding, and how seemingly simple acts of care can have a profound impact on a mother's physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.We also talk about something modern culture frequently overlooks: the mother needs mothering, too.Whether you're expecting, newly postpartum, supporting someone who has recently given birth, or simply curious about Ayurveda and women's health, this conversation offers a beautiful perspective on what recovery can look like when we honor the body's natural rhythms instead of fighting them.In this episode, we discuss:• The Ayurvedic approach to postpartum recovery• Why rest is essential after childbirth• Using food as nourishment and medicine• The importance of warmth, grounding, and routine• Supporting digestion during the postpartum period• Why Ayurveda views postpartum as a unique window for healing• Caring for the mother's nervous system and emotional well-being• Elizabeth's own postpartum experience and how it changed her life's work• What an Ayurvedic doula provides for new mothers• Reconnecting with nature and the body's natural rhythms• Creating a postpartum experience centered around compassion rather than expectationAbout Elizabeth SwamyElizabeth Marie Swamy is an Ayurvedic Doctor, Ayurvedic Doula, yoga teacher, and founder of Vedic Wild Ayurveda, where she supports women through restorative postpartum care, nourishing meals, and holistic healing rooted in Ayurvedic wisdom.Elizabeth began studying Ayurveda through her yoga teacher training before continuing her education at the Kripalu School of Ayurveda, where she became an Ayurveda Health Counselor.
