“B” is for Bull, Stephen (died 1800)

“B” is for Bull, Stephen (died 1800). Soldier, legislator. Born in South Carolina, Bull was descended from one of the first families of colonial South Carolina. He represented Prince William’s Parish in the Commons House of Assembly (1757-1760), the First and Second Provincial Congresses (1775-1776) and the First and Second General Assemblies (1776-1778). With the onset of the American Revolution, unlike most members of his family, he supported the American cause. He led his regiment in the occupation of Savannah in 1776 and was promoted to brigadier general. With General William Moultrie, he participated in the American victory at the Battle of Port Royal. After the fall of Charleston, Bull went into self-imposed exile in Virginia. After the war Stephen Bull was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1783 to 1790.
