Through his observational study, Spitz revealed a harrowing truth: despite receiving adequate nutrition and basic care, many infants in these institutions suffered from a condition he termed "hospitalism." His findings, published in the study “Hospitalism: An Inquiry Into the Genesis of Psychiatric Conditions in Early Childhood” (Psychoanal Study Child 1:53-74, 1945), demonstrated that infants deprived of physical contact, affection, and emotional interaction showed severe developmental delays, emotional distress, and alarmingly, a higher mortality rate. This research was pivotal in changing childcare practices and highlighted the critical importance of human touch and emotional care in early childhood development.Dr. Spitz's work, along with subsequent research, underscored that human touch and emotional connection are not just beneficial but essential for the healthy growth and survival of infants, leading to significant reforms in child care systems and practices globally."TEXT ME here - Have a question?
