The years of its operation closely mirrors the timeline of the AIDS crisis.Please let it be known: in the 1970s-1980s, there existed urban centers where literally tens of thousands of homosexuals assembled on a weekly if not nightly basis. These were not the rinky-dink clubs, they were enormous palladiums, packed to the brim with actual gay people in real spaces. Unlike the Paradise Garage, whose crowd was also gay but largely black and latino, or Danceteria and The Pyramid Club, whose downtown crowds were perhaps a bit more diverse and arty, The Saint catered explicitly to white homosexual urbanites. The musclebound, close-cropped crew cut + mustachioed look that I have previously called the “ACT-UP Aesthetic” was very much expressed by patrons of this infamous discotheque.
