Backpacking Dogs

from News For Kids · host ICRT

Backpacking Dogs In a big park in the UK, many dogs wear backpacks… on their stomachs! Why? A long time ago, the UK had wolves. The wolves walked a lot. They walked in forests. They walked in tall grass. Seeds caught on their fur. They walked some more. Seeds fell off their fur. And new plants grew in new places. But the UK doesn't have wolves now. And this big park wanted lots of new plants. It needed to spread seeds in many places. Lots of people and their dogs come to this park. The dogs love to walk everywhere there. Hmmmm … dogs, wolves, dogs, wolves, dogs… Maybe dogs can spread seeds too! Faster than wolves! Park workers put seeds in small backpacks. The backpacks have small holes. The holes let the seeds fall one by one. The workers ask people to put these backpacks on their dog's stomach. The dogs walk. The seeds fall. And now some new plants are growing! People are excited. The park will have many new plants. This Impact Studios production is a collaboration with the Governor family, UTS Faculty of Law and Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research. The Last Outlaws teamKatherine Biber - UTS Law Professor and Chief InvestigatorAunty Loretta Parsley - Great-granddaughter of Jimmy Governor and the Governor Family Historian Leroy Parsons - Governor descendant, Narrator and Co-WriterKaitlyn Sawrey - Host, Writer and Senior ProducerFrank Lopez - Writer, Managing Next Generation Energy Systems Cambridge University Background Stakeholders working with energy systems have to make complex decisions formulated from risk-based assessments about the future. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
