Bad Blood: What You Should Know About Hematuria, Bladder and Kidney Cancer

Bladder cancer affects the stretchy, transitional cells of the bladder, which allow it to shrink and expand as bladders so wonderfully do. This transitional cell epithelium exists from the inside of the kidney, through the ureters, into the inner lining of the bladder and the first part of the urethra. Consequently, bladder cancer can actually exist anywhere from the kidney all the way down the ureters and even underneath the bladder. The number one symptom of bladder cancer is visible blood in the urine without any accompanying pain. Blood in the urine should always be treated as an alarming symptom and its cause identified. While it could be something like an infection or kidney stone, it could also be an indication of something much worse. Smokers or those exposed to cigarette smoke are at a higher risk of developing bladder cancer. If your doctor suspects you might be at risk for bladder cancer, a simple CT Scan can help them determine whether further testing, such as a cystoscopy, is necessary. When a tumor is found, it must be removed and examined under a microscope to determine how advanced the cancer is. Having cancer of the bladder makes you much more likely to develop cancer of the kidney, and vice versa. Once a cancer of this kind has been diagnosed, you will require careful monitoring for the rest of your life.
