Bagratid Armenia

In this episode, we explore Bagratid Armenia, the medieval Armenian kingdom restored under Ashot I in the late ninth century after centuries of Arab rule. We examine how the kingdom balanced relations with the Byzantine Empire and the Abbasid Caliphate, while entering a cultural and economic golden age marked by the rise of Ani, flourishing international trade, distinctive church architecture, and major achievements in Christian art and literature. We also trace the political fragmentation that divided the kingdom into rival sub-kingdoms, weakening Armenian resistance to growing Byzantine pressure and the advance of the Seljuk Turks, and ultimately leading to the fall of the Bagratid kingdom in 1045.
